Need audio scrubbing effect in video

I’m currently editing using Vegas 4 and like the velocity envelope feature for altering the video speed; however there are times when I want to the same effect on the audio. Ideally, I’d like to find a program where there is the option of allowing changes in velocity envelope to apply to both video and audio simultaneously —sort of like what happens when you use the scrub tool to scrub back and forth. In fact, the only way I’ve been able to capture the effect I’m looking for is to use a second program, Camtasia, to record the video and audio in the Vegas preview screen while I use the scrub button to slow things down. This creates a whole new AVI that I then import back into Vegas and can edit it back into the footage. The problem is it creates a lot of extra editing, and it’s not very precise.

Is there another NLE software, or a better method, for getting that scrubbed video and audio effect?

Instead of using the Velocity envelope, you can Group the audio and video then Ctl + Drag the edge of the events to slow them down together.

Trick: Open a second instance of Vegas, load the audio file you want to do a variable speed change on. Play the file and manipulate the scrub control- you can speed up, slow down, go backwards...practice doing that a couple of times. Got the feel you want? Now record this in the other open copy of Vegas (the Master timeline) . Watching my velocity-enveloped video, I can get it right in a couple of tries (loop recording into an empty event). This isn't super intutiive but it takes hardly any time to set up and should get you the desired end result very quickly.

Thanks MJhig and SonyEPM for the suggestions.

These are both useful options which should be helpful in trying to replicate David Lynch style ultra-slowed down speech for dramtic audio effect during slow motion scenes.

I'd tried out the time stretching option in the past, but it didn't have the effect I wanted on the audio (i.e. changing the pitch as well as the velocity). Vegas trys to automatically correct the pitch of the audio so that it sounds normal, which exactly the opposite of what I want. But after looking at this feature again I realize that the Lock To Stretch option can be selected, which turns off the pitch correction.

I'll try out the other suggestion of recording audio in Vegas while watching the video and syncing it up with the scrub tool. That's a clever workaround I hadn't thought of. I suppose it takes some practce to make sure it works well, but at least it avoid having to record using Camtasia.

Perchance does anyone know if syncing the velocity envelop with the audio will be offered in Vegas 6? Probably not a high demand feature, but it would be really handy.

Thanks!

"Probably not a high demand feature"

I'd personally consider upgrading just for this feature - but I suspect other people might be dissapointed if it was the only upgrade! ;-)

Yep, count me in as thinking 'velocity envelopes' would be a nice thing to have. Pitch envelopes, as us audio-only users would probably call them. Would be a great for creativity.

I second that! Pitch envelopes!

Yes pitch envelopes are needed. But in particular, the pitch needs to be synced to the velocity of the video. That would be supercool

agreed!
