My question seems quite basic compared to some of the high tech stuff going on here, but i am quite the novice and could use some help. So, I have a Sony Net MD and want to import files from my MD to my PC and then convert them to MP3 and WAV files. I have the audio cable conneced from my headphone jack on the MD to my line in jack on my PC. I hear the audio playing but cannot record. I have Sound Forge 7.0. and am going through the steps and semm to be recording, but when I try to playback I don't hear anything. HELP!

You may have your sound card set to monitor the line in, but not record from it. Open up the sound card's mixer control panel, choose Options / Properties / Recording. Choose the line input on that screen and you should be able to record.

Ok - bear with me please, I think I am accessing the sound card through the program Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. Does that sound right? There is no options/properties/recording button, but under record source I chose "Line in" and for VersaJack I choose "Analog In". Does that sound right. If so, still not able to record. Or at least not able to hear what I have recorded. Would that have anything to do with having to put it through the WAV converter first. Or should I be able to hear it regardless? Lots of questions - sorry! Appreciate all of your input.

If your sound card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, then that sounds correct, as does your other settings.. However I'm not familier with the "WAV converter".

In Sound Forge, make sure you have the proper sound card selected for record & playback:. Options> Preferences> Wave.

Do you see activity on the SF record window meter while playing back the source MD?
Check the record attributes, select : (Ctrl+ R) Record> New> Select 44.1/16 bit - stereo.

Everything mentioned in your email is applied. Still not recording. Though, it's strange, it does register the amount of time I recorded but there is no audio. As far as activity on the record window meter - there are two verticle bars (green) on the lower right of the screen and those are moving up and down slightly. But there is no movement on the central (white) screen. I feel like this is supposed to be a very elementary thing and I'm struggling. Thanks for the patience.

dumb question .. are absolutly sure your cable is good? Are you using any mono-stereo adaptors or anything ect.?

I think'in its a sound card issue, does the sound card work otherwise, for playback, ect.?
If so there's probably a setting someplace your missing.

At what level are you seeing activity? -20, -40, -60, -80dB?
Right click the meter to change the resolution.

For MP3 conversion, I always use WinLAME. It's one of the most configurable MP3 encoders around, and it's fast. Very fast. Very, very fast. Also, it's Free. Free is good, so you can encode more than 20 tracks before you need to pay some guys off in Germany. The GUI is nice, simple, and very complete, so read the help files. All those switches and buttons can cause untold trouble.

Here's their webaddress:

Yes, I agree with Metrazol, I've been using th LAMErc3 for quite a while, it's real fast and configurable. Some say however the Frauhoffer encoder in SF sounds better at lower bps rates, I expermented some and found this to be true, all things being equal. But, the LAME has so many more encoding options. .. and that's even without going to the pre-set .xml code file where's there is even more to tweak .
