Subject:ACID 5.0 recording issues

Hello,

I just recently upgradded to ACID PRO 5.0 from Pro 4.0. I noticed a new problem in 5.0 that I wasn't having in 4.0. When I record a new audio track (guitar or anything like that), when I'm done recording the new track that shows up in the editing window is placed a few milliseconds behind where it should be. It's as if it's adding extra time before the audio starts coming in. I'm not talking about playing behind the beat, or the computer not being able to handle the tracks. You can see it visually in the editor that the track is not lined up right. I have to zoom way in and move the track forward so it lines up, otherwise it's unbearable to listen to. I do not have this problem in 4.0! Please Help! I've also noticed a lot of clicks and pops in 5.0 that didn't occur in 4.0.

Please answer these questions:

What audio hardware are you using?
What driver model - Wave Classic, ASIO, Mapper - are you using?
What sample rate/bit depth are you using?

I'm using Soundblaster Live! for my audio interface
I have the program set on Microsoft Sound Mapper
I'm recording at 16bit and 44,100

I'm also hearing a bunch of crakling and popping noise that I don't get in ACID 4.0. Is that an issue with XP service pack 2? I know other adio programs have trouble with servide pack 2.

One thing you can do is set your recording to 16-bit/48KHz. The Soundblaster Live can only sample at 48KHz in the hardware. That means it’s recording at 48KHz and down sampling to 44.1KHz as you requested. You should just let it run at 48KHz. Perhaps the down sampling is causing the audio to shift? (just a guess)

Hey KevB,

I was having the same problem. Check out my thread here and see if it relates to your situation:

In my case, changing to the ASIO driver seems to have fixed the problem.

Good luck!

I have also had the the same problem. I'm using a SB Live! card with the same settings as KevB. I did manage to get rid of the crackling and popping by adding 1 or 2 more audio playback buffers. You can find this option under the advanced adio settings I believe. As for the latency, I did not have problems in earlier versions of ACID, but for some reason 5.0 has a problem with this.

A couple of things to try:

- Change your project to a sample rate of 48 khz. The SBLive only physically support 48 khz and force a resample in Windows to accomidate 44.1 kHz.
- Use the Wave Classic driver vs the Mapper
- Adjust the Recording offset latency
- Try the DirectSound Surround Mapper drivers in ACID. (These are NOT just for Surround mode.)

I don't believe Creative provides ASIO drivers for the SBLive, but if you can locate ASIO drivers, the problem will go away.

FWIW: This is caused by how the Wave drivers and the SBLIve hardware work. The input and output of the drivers is completely asynchronous.

However, since you didn't experiance problems in ACID 4, we will make sure we look at this for the update of 5.0.

I tried all of the ideas listed in this thread and they didn't changed anything. I just did a test between ACID 4.0 and 5.0.
I have them on the same computer with the same settings I listed above. ACID 4.0 works perfectly fine, and ACID 5.0 does not. In 4.0 the recording is placed where it should be, and in 5.0 it's so off it's unbearable to listen to. So you can rule out any settings dealing with the sound card or computer hardware. It's something with the program that's not working right. I'm getting cleaner recordings and playback in 4.0 as well. I've always loved using ACID for recording and programming loops, but I'm starting to wonder what the benefit is with upgrading to 5.0. If anyone has any other suggestions, please help!

I will need specifics if you have tried all the suggestions. (I am unable to reproduce this problem with an SBLive and ACID 5.0)

How far off is the recording? (You seem to be saying that the newly recorded track is early - rather than late.)
Changing the record offset setting has no affect at all?
Can you email me an project that shows this problem?

im recording at 24-bit/48KHz and im using a sound blaster audigy platinum pro sound card and im getting the delay also like i sed in anoter post made earlyer tryed to chang from microsoft sound map to asio and it seid it dont suport 24-bit/48KHz so im lost also

That’s because the Audigy doesn’t support 24-bit/48KHz in hardware. It only supports 16-bit/48Khz sample rate. What is happening is the Audigy is resampling your audio on-the-fly to 24-bit which introduces a delay while it recalculates the bit depth (with absolutely no gain in quality).

Try using the ASIO drivers and use 16-bit/48Khz and see if that fixes it.

Understand that the Audigy does not actually support 24 bits. This is why the ASIO driver tells you this as it talks directly to the hardware. Windows and the WDM driver maps the actual capabilities of the Audigy to whatever sample rate and bit depth you choose. This does not mean you are actually recording 24 bits worth of audio.

Actually, the audio is late. I tried to see if there was an exact amount of time it was off, but I had a hard time since different takes can vary when your looking at milliseconds. I will gladly e-mail you one of my sessions, just tell me the best way to do it. Thanks for helping out!

Burns,

That is what I am trying to discover. I have not been able to reproduce the problem. Once I can reproduce it, I can fix it. and it will be part of an update.

I am only offering alternative solutions until that time.

KevB.

Please email me an ACID_zip project to

phaller -at- sonypictures - dot - com.

Note that our fire wall prevents zip files from being transfered. Rename the file.

i.e.

foobar.acd-zip

to

foobar.foo

Thanks
Peter
