Occasional problem with preview to external monitor

I've been experience difficulties getting an image outputting to external monitor recently. I'm actually editing PAL footage for once so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

FYI: I'm outputting to Sony PVM 14 L5/1 production monitor, via a DSR-11 deck (switch to PAL mode).

I have everything up and running my footage on the timeline and I hit the "preview to external monitor button" and get nothing. So I turn the button off- then try again. Nothing again. I go and change the output setting to "Draft (auto)" and try a third time...nothing for about 5 seconds then FINALLY get an image.

Is this nomral. Why am I having problem getting a signal to my production monitor all the sudden. Does the footage being PAL have anything to do with it? I don't recall having this problem with my normal NTSC footage.

Also every so often when I hit the "preview to external monitor" button everything freezes and my cursor becomes an hourglass. The only way to "un-freeze" it is to turn off my device I'm using to output to external monitor whether it be my deck or a DV camera. Is this a known issue also?

Assuming this once worked better, two questions:

Do you have other 1394 devices plugged in?
Have you recently installed WinXP SP2?

Also - there is one additional Vegas setting to check - make sure Options>Preferences>Video Device>.."Recompress Edited Frames" button is checked for external preview.

No and no. I have an external Maxtor drive connected via IEEE. Then the DSR-11 connected via the external drive. This is how I've always had it connected.

It IS indeed connected via the IEEE on my Audigy2 card. I avoid using my onboard IEEE ports as there is a confilict between them and my onbaord Promise raid controller.

Have you played PAL footage on the NTSC monitor before? I thought this couldnt work in the first place. 25 fps versus 29.97 fps.. is there a setting for PAL on the external monitor by chance?

It just sounds wierd trying to play PAL footage on an NTSC monitor.... but then again I have never tried it before.

The project propertiesin Vegas have to be set to those of your external monitor. In my case, I am in a PAL region and viewing on a PAL monitor.

If I forget to change the project template to PAL (as it usually defaults to NTSC) then I can't see anything on my monitor.

I always forget this and scratch my head wondering what's gone wrong.

Could be that because you are working on PAL footage, Vegas has assumed it is a PAL project and set that as the output and that's why it won't appear on your monitor?

Just a thought.

Other forums have documented discussions of intermittent problems with IEEE connections through Audigy cards and recommend avoiding them for video work.

I had a similar problem.

I think I fixed it by updating my ATI video card drivers believe it or not.

I also had a weird issue with my Toshiba 16:9 monitor which I think was trying to remove the pulldown from my 24PA output.
