Hey ACID buds.

Say, I'm working on a tune in ACID and I think it could use some horns.
I pulled in a sample from Sony's Horncraft which showed me how great
it will sound when I get the RIGHT parts.

The problem with the Horncraft parts is that they are a section and not
single horns. So inevitably there are wrong notes as my chords change
which I can't fix, as I don't have the constituent horns, just the section.

I'm looking for high quality horn parts... or just one shots, of REAL horns.
Preferably not chinsy-ass sounding synth horns. :-)

Anyone know of any?

Thanks!

Rick

Chronic Horns. Memphis horns.maybe Vince Andrews. But after trying this A LOT...i found it's pretty hard to do it without a breath controller, as well as an inordinate sense of exactly what harmony and "whoplayswhatwhen" orchestration, which is why you may end up using sampled riff/parts anyway. After you work with a good library for a while though, it's not such a bad thing.

The worst to my ear are the cheeseball midi things. I have tried to use (for example) various Fahnk and r+b thangs..you know somebody who spent way too much time on transcribing "I got you"..but then it's played thru a soundblaster midi sax..

, if you are doing reggae or dub. though .the midi things seem to fit just right.

Well there are tons of subtlties to horns, but
for now I'm thinking of pops. Kinda R&B, stonesy
horns. That should be doable. At least at the
demo level, no?

Cheap synth horns are real bad, but I bet there
are good ones when you have the high end equipment.

Where are these to be found?

for stones/bobby keys exile on main street (this the right ballpark?) It's Memphis Horns..there's stuff on there Bobby Keys wish he'd played..

http://www.ilio.com/ilio/memphis/

A little rich for the blood..but well worth it.

As far as the midi stuff..like I said, unless you are doing Roots Dub/reggae (for which that stuff is way cool, as long as you have the space echo mon) ..don't go there. unless you are doing jingles for carpet companies, in which case i say..yes sir senator!

Thanks folks. These all sound good. The problem I see with horns is that unless you write your song around the horn parts, if you use horn *section* loops, they will likely result in bad notes in your song. I prefer to take single notes and construct the harmonies myself.

Cheers,

Eric
