Hey, has anyone bought Sony's $99 DVD for ACID 5? How is it? Thanks, Rick |

Been asking for a while, it's not available, though i was told "middle of november" which must mean in SonySpeak, 11/05. there's a book by a guy who's on this forum a lot due in March. Sure would be nice to have something about the product. |

Yea, the book is called Instant ACID and is a collaboration between myself and Iacobus (mD). It’s now scheduled for Feb ’05 release which is just two weeks away. You can pre-order it at Amazon.com or Walmart.com. As far as I know, the Sony DVD hasn’t been released yet. ~jr |

Acid Pro 5 Power: The Official Guide to Sony's Acid Pro 5. has just been released. It's available at Amazon for $23.09. It looks pretty comprehensive and I just bought it. I have no idea when the DVD is going to be released. We have been waiting for it for a long time. regards, Larry |

Hey jr.... really looking forward to your book. I really appreciate your posts here. How would you say your book differs from ACID 3.0 (Sam's Teach Yourself)? Other than the obvious version difference? Do you have any completed tunes that come with your book, that we can dissemble and learn from? I really liked the Sam's book. Never got all the way through it though... Ah, life. I have some of the basics of ACID, but don't know my VST synths from my 5.1 Surround Sound! lol! |

I must confess that I’ve never read ACID 3.0 (Sam's Teach Yourself) so I can’t make a comparison. The “Instant” series are not “Bible” books. Meaning they are not everything you want to know about ACID. They are focused what you need to know to be productive quickly performing both beginning and advanced tasks. They are VERY visual and open horizontally so that the facing pages have a column of text on each side with four (4) pictures in the center. So it’s very much stepwise tutorial approach with lots of pictures. You will definitely finish this book. That’s the whole idea. It’s more like a task-oriented reference that you can keep coming back to and definitely don’t have to read cover-to-cover to get what you need out of it. I addition to the basics of looping, we cover Beatmapping tracks that do not map cleanly, setup and recording Audio & MIDI and getting rid of those nasty heads and tails (because there is no punch-in/out in ACID), Multi-port VSTi’s, ReWiring ACID to Reason and SONAR, Creating Grooves, using the Media Manager, Pseudo-Granular Synthesis, Effects and panning wet and dry tracks, Mixing 5.1 Surround, Mastering, etc. all with screen shots that guide you through the tutorials step-by-step. Iacobus is a guitar player who does mostly audio recording and I’m a keyboard player who does mostly MIDI recording so between us we cover both formats and share our workflows, tips & tricks, that we’ve learned. ~jr |

"Iacobus is a guitar player who does mostly audio recording and I’m a keyboard player who does mostly MIDI recording" Cool JR, teach me how to.... 1. Record midi bulk dumps from my FX's units onto an Acid track? ....Oops...can't do that one 2. Put program changes on a midi track so that my keyboard patches will change in the middle of a song. .....shoot....can't do that one either 3. Create seperate Verse, chorus, Bridge...etc...sequences and place them in a song order arangement onto one track ....Damn...can't do that one either 4. Ok, then ask him how I can make the metronome countoff in a wait record mode, and then jumps into recording when I press the first note on my midi controler ....Damn....I can't even do that one either. 5. Alright I'm unsure of this one, so please tell me how to do a list edit function on a note that's already recorded. I want to change the velocity value, the release value, and the duration value I'ld like to fine tune nudge it up just a tad. Congratulations on the writing the book, it must have been a lot of work. I'll have to wait for the Acid 6 version, if/when they decide to put a real midi sequencer in there or maybe Midi Forge will come to save me. |

Red, I know you have a pretty long MIDI wish list from reading your other posts. I’m a little “old school” when it comes to recording. I like my performance to show through and I rarely modify the MIDI data other than to select the best performance out of several I’ve recorded in a single take. I also don’t use any outboard gear when I record so I have no need for SysEx dumps or for patch changes. I just load a VSTi and play the part. If I need another synth I load another instance of it. So MIDI editing and patch changes aren’t even on my radar. You have to understand, I stopped performing live in 1981 and just got back into music recently. Before I left, bought all new equipment (new for 1981). So in hardware, I have a brand spanking new Ensoniq SQ-80, Ensonic EPS, Oberheim Matrix-1000, Proteus/1, along with my Minimoog, and Hammond B3. With the exception of the minimoog and B3, which are not MIDI, none of these other keyboards are worth recording today. The soft synths from companies like Arturia and Native Instruments have them beat. I have no problem with verses, chorus, and bridge being on 3 separate tracks. That’s just how ACID is for everything. I’m glad Sony added folder tracks to clean this up. My comment about trimming heads and tails is exactly your comment about the metronome not having a pre-roll or a way to punch-in/out without using the transport so I’m with ya’ on that one. Punch-in/out is high on my list of features I’d like to see next. Trimming heads and tails on every take is for the birds. My only two other MIDI feature request are Take Markers when you record MIDI loops like audio recording does, and automatable VSTi parameter envelopes on the timeline like Tracktion does. If I do need more MIDI Sequencer functionality, I’ll ReWire ACID to Tracktion or SONAR. (that’s also covered in the book) ;-) > Congratulations on the writing the book Thank you. I have always wanted to write a book and I’ve always read books and said to myself, “I could have written that!” (like I’m sure many of you have). Well... Iacobus was talking in this thread about how he had lots of tips and would like to write a book but he said it was a lot of work for one person. I sent him an email that said, “what about two people?” and the rest, as they say, is history. So I have Iacobus to thank for wanting to do it with me. (and he does have a lot of great tips that are in the book) ~jr |

I am jealous JR. I have for the longest time thought many times on writing a book on using Sound Forge and it's use in Mastering Audio. I have also considered writing an Audio users guide for Vegas. I have a lot of background in using Vegas in music production and also advertising production for national radio and TV spots. I enjoy teaching. Thus, why I hang out in these forums. For 5 years while I was also working in recording studios I would teach classes in the evenings and weekends, where I could not only teach the physics behind recording and why you things certain ways, but I could also share with the students practical experiences in both the more commercial engineering recording position and also as a music recording engineer. So I think I could bring a lot of different types of experiences used in the real world into a book. Congrats, Red |

2. Put program changes on a midi track so that my keyboard patches will change in the middle of a song. Actually, I can do this with ACID Pro sending changes to my GNX2 guitar effects processor via the MIDI List Editor...though I haven't found a practical use for it...yet. :) Don't be jealous, Red. It's not exactly easy. Creating the content for the book is the fun part; organizing and editing the book is the more monotonous part. Still, if you're interested, don't be afraid to propose ideas to various publishers. I believe that's how JohnnyRoy got the ball rolling. And I'm sure they'd listen knowing your credentials. Just remember to brace yourself, especially when working alone. Iacobus ------- RodelWorks - Original Music for the Unafraid Pre-order Instant ACID mD at ACIDplanet |
