CAN ANYONE HELP ME??!!

Hi there!

I've decided to recut a short film I made a few months ago and have opened the Vegas project that was saved at the time. All the video files are recognised, as is the music. However, there is no picture from the video files. Both on the timeline and the preview screen - nothing but black. I even tried re-rendering the movie but simply got a black screen with all the sound.

Am I being an idiot here (probably!) or is there a problem with the programme?

Please help!
Many thanks - Rich

Is this on a new computer?

Perhaps you may need to reinstall a codec. If the codec isn't installed you will see media on your drives but they will turn up black in vegas.

Do the video files play in Media Player?

Sorry to ask the obvious, but did you "recapture" the footage? Wa it from source? Or was it from the finally video? OR were the clips still on the HDrive? If you recapture from tape, maybe .. just maybe you didn't have the recapture VIDEO selected too? . .Only a thought. Check out your VidCap file you used then ansd see in the Prefs .. . that's for starters. Oh if you CAN see thumbnails of the clips then I'm way outta wack! If you can't . .well this may be the case.

Did it say if it needed to search for source files? If so you may need to point it in the direction of your old files. It sounds like you are simply missing the source files.

Did you delete your old files after you made your orig. cut?

Also is your video track muted?

Yeah, BK, but wouldn't he still see his thumbnails, images?

Thanks for the advice so far. All clips stayed on my hard drive and have not been moved etc. The clips do play in Media Player so maybe it is a codec issue. I'll keep on tryin'!

Thanks again and best wishes to all.

Right click on the file and check codec.

Try resetting Vegas to it's default settings. You can do this my pressing and holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys then launching Vegas. When Vegas opens fully, then let go of the keyboard keys. Vegas is now set at it's original defaults. No try opeing your veg file and see if you can view it.
Good Luck,
Eric

I encountered a similar, but slightly different problem, but, perhaps my solution will work for you.

I had a large project stored on a large drive installed on the secondary controller in my old machine. That setup was too slow for streaming video, but the drive was new and had plenty of storage space, so, if was great for storing clips. When I stored this project there, my plan was always to simply remove the drive, install it in a faster computer, and go from there.

To my horror, when I needed the clips and moved the drive, half the project's clips were just black, no thumbnails (and no sound, either). They also would not play with WMP. I was inclined to consider the project lost except that I thought it strange that Vegas could see the "shadow" of the project, reserved space for all those black thumbnails on the timeline, correct project length, etc.

In my case, it turned out that, for some reason, my new computer (3.0 GB, 1.5 GB RAM) would not recognize the full capacity of the drive (I haven't figured out why, yet . . . it's brand new and should have all the latest bio's and what not).

Anyhow, when I replaced the drive into the old computer, all files were intact and recognizable abain (just would play smoothly due to the speed issue).

My solution was to copy the files to my new computer (plenty of space on that one, too), over a network connection. Task took a long time, but once transferred, the files were fine.

In your case, if those files play fine in your media player, I would copy them to a new location, then, direct Vegas to that new location and see what happens. It might work.

Good luck.
