There are LOTS of transfer houses in Arizona, I used to use one in Tempe, not far from SkyHarbor. If you don't own a deck, I'd not even rent one, just take it to the facility and have it transferred while you wait, if they'll do that. You can't use a Betamax tape in a Beta deck, however.
Yes, the tape should be fine for one pass

Beta and BetaMax are two completely different formats, but both use the same tapes. Beta and BataMax will not play each other's tapes. I have 5 BetaMax decks in great condition. If the tapes are really in BetaMax format. I could transfer them to DV for you.

Boy do I remember... Anybody want to buy a hardly used Sony betamax player?

Down memory lane... IF you have both a betamax and a VHS player you can do the transfer yourself painlessly, just feed the output of one into the input of the other and you get a dub. I know... I use to get professional bowling lessons from a PBA member and he would tape me. He had a VHS camera, I had a betamax as did many of his other clients. He just used some tangle of cables to go one format to the other.

If you have a A/D converter like the Canopus, should be no problem to convert to DV. I'm going to do that will my old bowling "lessons" once I get up the courage to view a thiner me of days gone by when I use to have close to a 200 bowling average. That's a long time in the past too.

Not bad billy, I don't think I ever got my average over about 145-150.

I bought an old Sony Super Betamax SL-100 beta II and III, curious thing though it only outputs mono audio. I only paid $20.00 for it so I'm not too upset.

Well, I have two perfectly working betamax machines myself. One top loading and one front loading with the cabled remote for it. So I can makes copies for people too if needed.

It's almost poetic irony that Betamax decks are selling for more than VHS decks on eBay in 2005. Hell, even more than some recordable DVD machines. I think large collections of 2 decade old pornography has something to do with it. :-)

I may have missed this, but, what format are you looking to transfer to? I have a Betamax - Sony SL-2700. I assume it is compatible with your source tape, and, if I can accommodate your destination format, I'd be happy to do it for you. Let me know.
