newbie editing questions

I'm a long-time user of Sound Forge and just started getting into video (I'm using a copy of VideoFactory that I bought for my wife a few years ago).

Here's my question... I have 2 mpg files - each about 40 mins. There are 2 segments on each one. What I want to do is delete the 2nd segment from one of the files & paste what's left onto the end of the other file (essentially creating a single file with three 20 min segments). If I could just delete the segment I don't want, that would be OK too. But when I try that, all I get is 20 mins of black (no video/audio). The file length is still 40 mins. I figured I could just 'delete' the segment I don't want (like I could in SF) and be left with a 20 min segment. Am I overlooking something?

Also, if I'm editing an MPG file, why can't I just save it in the same format? Why does it default to a .vf file instead? I tried rendering to MPG, but it took almost 2 hours to render (what I thought was going to be) a 20 min file.

Is there a better/quicker way to do all of this? Seems like there should be...

Thanks in advance...

Steve

I don't use Video Factory, but I think the .vf file is project file. The equivalent in Vegas is a veg file. When you save, you are saving the project. The project contains links to the media files and retains all the edits you have made.

When you render, that is when you create a new video file.

I think your problem is you are still looking at the original timeline with its original length. When nothing is on the timeline and you play that section back it just shows up as black.

When you render, VideoFactory should recongize what the end of the timeline is and just render that section.
Vegas has the feature where you select a region and render just that section. You can see if VF has that.

Rendering to mpeg is time consuming, what speed computer are you using.

You shoud be able to. curser over the area where you are cutting the clip hit s . Splits the clip, click on the clip you dont want and hit the delete key.

Video factory supported mpeg ?
