Subject:Should I Upgrade from Audigy 2 ZS?

I am currently recording using the Audigy 2 ZS interface to my Pentium 4 computer. I just upgraded my computer and have gained a workable understanding of the issues involved in Acid Pro 5.0. Now that I face latency issues because I am recording at above the 48K recording capability of the Audigy I am considering upgrading to a more Professional rack mounted I/O and interface like MOTU. Will these unitswork easily with Acid Pro 5.0, or should I use the software they recommend? Anyone have any experience with the higher end consumer units? (of course not the pro $10,000 and up line, just the $1,000 to 2,000 level units)

What sample rate do you want to work at - and more importantly, why?

Understand you are NOT recording at anything other that 48 kHz with the Audigy. All you are doing is forcing Windows to resample 48 kHz audio to what ever sample rate you set up. This is just a performance/CPU cycle suck. You are getting nothing in return.

The MOTU units are very good and provide a multitude of i/o options. You need to determine whether you are going to need more than 2 inputs (stereo) and then also realize that ACID can only record upto 2 channels at a time.

If all you want is higher sample rates, there are any number of low cost solutions available. The DAL CardDelux or anything from Lynx are great stereo solutions that offer high sample rates.

Hey thanks Peter I never knew that all this rigimarole about sample rates and which device to use in XP is just the final state of the signal, but that my actual sample at the point of analog conversion is still only 48 kHz...that actually makes sense. I usually don't need more than one input, but would prefer a rack mounted unit with top notch audio quality and of course a 96 sampling capability.

I have everything mixed through an analog Mackie mixer, with two sets of parallel routed effects processors and two in series upline of the mixer. So I suspect that I will not be using all of the I/O slots on a MOTU board, but that it STILL would be the right option for me.
