Subject:Acid Pro 4.0: dragged or opened track headers appear but are empty

I am a first-time user, and have just installed 4.0 after having had it for almost a year.

The demo that preloads the first time works fine as it is.

When i start a new project (clean slate), and drag in (or open; makes no difference), .mid or .mp3 or .wav files, the header and track are created but there is no waveform displayed and nothing sounds when i "play" the track. Even when i drag in the demo WAV file
DESIGNER DANCE TOOLS hPROMO 01.WAV, only the header is created, no waveform or sound.

Note: in all cases, when i right-click> Properties for the track, it has correct behavoir (even piano roll editing for midi)

Any thoughts for what I'm doing wrong at the top level for the tracks?

thanks

Repeat after me: Drag – Drop – Paint. You forgot to paint. ;-)

Unlike other audio applications, ACID allows you to pain events where you want them but if you don’t paint at least one event, it makes no sound at all. Just drag the drawing tool across the timeline and the waveform will be painted whereever you drag. If you want to quickly paint a large wave file, use the Paint Tool and hold the CTRL key while you click. It will paint the wave for its entire duration.

perfect, many thanks!

Other questions:
1. Is there a way to sound (test-hear) individual notes in the piano roll editor by clicking on the keyboard?
Another tool i use plays the note (to hear it) and also plays notes as you move an existing note on the piano roll up or down, a sort of glissando effect across the keyboard, so you can place the harmony just right.

2. How to choose output in Type 0 or Type 1 when exporting midi to a .mid file?

3. Is there a keyboard shortcut or right-click context menu item that goes directly to the piano roll editor

4. Is there a way in the piano roll editor to highlight the key on the keyboard to match where the cursor is so one can "tiangulate" instead of having your eye to follow the row delineations over to the left.

5. Is there a way in the piano roll editor to expand (linearly) the events (notes) on the timeline, much like the stretch function in Vegas. (to make the selected set of notes expand to fill the time period) I need to essentially slow a 28 second excerpt down to fill 30 seconds.

Use the Monitor icon. The last icon on the toolbar in the MIDI Piano Roll Editor is a Speaker. If you hover over it, it’s labeled Monitor. Just press to turn monitoring on and it will behave as you expect.

> 2. How to choose output in Type 0 or Type 1 when exporting midi to a .mid file?

ACID only writes Type 1 (SMF1) MIDI files. (It reads both SMF0 & SMF1 files)

Press ALT+6 after selecting the MIDI track you want to edit.

No, unfortunately. You should submit this as a suggestion. Other applications do this and it makes it a lot easier to see what you are doing, I agree.

No, but you could do this by making the tempo slower. It has the same effect. In fact, ACID has an easy way to set this:

1. Make sure the Time Ruler is visible at the bottom of the track area (it’s off by default). Use View > Time Ruler > Show Time Ruler to turn it on
2. Drop a Time Marker (H) at 30 seconds on the time ruler
3. Place your cursor at 28 seconds on the time ruler
4. Right-click on the Time Marker and select Adjust Tempo to Match Marker to Cursor

Your project will adjust the tempo so that MIDI file which use to end at the 28 second mark, now ends at the 30 second mark. This is very useful for adjusting music to fit commercial spots or other video events.

<shameless plug>
There is a new book Instant ACID which covers all of this. It should be out soon and you can pre-order it now.
