Subject:Unable to insert time in Acid Pro 5.0

Hello all,

I just acquired Acid 5.0 two days ago and I am unable to extend the timeline for my tracks. I do as the instructions say -

1. Position the cursor where you want to insert time.
2. From the Insert menu, choose Time. The Insert Time dialog box appears.

When I do this the "Time" choice is grayed out.

Anyone know why this would be?

Thanks,
Brett

You need to paint at least one event on a track for the time choice to be ungrayed. Do you have events on the timeline?

Hello,

Yes, I have a number of events on the timeline. I have 16 or so events and I even have FX plugins running. But I still do not seem to be able to increase the time on the overall mix.

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brett

Hello,

I see - I well misunderstood what was going on with the "insert time" issue. I tried it again and it does work as long as I have the cursor on an event that is in the timeline - not just having an event but not having the cursor on the event.

You see what I was attempting to do is lengthen the over time of the music. Thus, I thought I would use the insert time. Apparently you cannot do this unless you have an event selected (or an event happen where the cursor is selected).

Given that - how do you just extend the length of the overall mix?

I’m still not sure what you are trying to do. If you want the song to play longer but don’t want to add new parts to it, then decreasing the tempo will lengthen the song. (i.e., playing it slower makes it play longer)

Hello,

Yes - my intent was not to make it play longer by making it play slower. I wanted to add in more measures. What is odd to me about the "Insert time" issue is that you have to have a pieces of a track selected that not only has an event on it, but you have to have the cursor on the event so that you end up splitting apart the event that you want to play. Thus you add in more measures (time in the same tempo) and in doing so you have to redo a piece of the song.

I am not able to just select a blank section of the track and say insert in more time.

Does that make more sense?

Thanks,
Brett

I know exactly what you are talking about because I have to do the same thing when I create my Cheerleading music or creating a jingle where the time is specific to the project. In other words, the project may require 2:30 to be filled exactly, not short, not over.

OR you may want silence after the music is played so there is no sound when the music is finished so in case the person playing it has "Looping" enabled on their player, the music won't play immediately. (This is the case for cheerleader competitions where the routine stops at a pose. The song beginning again immediately would routine the performance. - I've seen this happen a few times...")

The only thing I think you are missing in what you did was to enable "Ripple Edits" before you clicked on the desired point of insertion.

This method will insert blank time to your project:

Go to the Options Menu > Make sure Ripple Edit is enabled > click the point you wish to add more time using the Draw Tool on any track, then go to the Insert menu > Time then input the desired time you wish to add. This will move the events down from the point of where you initially clicked. This method can also create silence at the end of a project the exact length you wish it to be. Just click at the end of the last event then with Ripple Edits enabled, Insert > Time. Type in the desired time of silence or whatever.

> I wanted to add in more measures

If you want to add more measures to a song then just paint more loops. What’s the problem? You don’t have to add time to a project. A project doesn’t have a fixed length. Just start painting loops after the end of the song and the song will continue.

Maybe you didn't read my post to him..

There are instances where projects need to be an exact time. Commercial edits, Radio spots, Corporate presentations, National Competing Cheerleading routines to name just a few.

You may want to read his entire post also as he explains what he is trying to do. He wishes to insert time, not just tack it on to the end. He may have an ending already created. I have come across this many times.

We are here to help each other...

OK, but I still don’t understand why he’s having trouble. If I place the cursor at a measure in the middle of my song and use Insert > Time, the entire song on ALL the tracks moves to the right for the given amount of time. That’s what insert time does. No need for ripple editing. That’s why I’m confused as to why its not working for him. There is no need to select an event and have it split as he’s describing. I’m just trying to understand what the problem is that he’s seeing.
