OT-Windows Power Management

Caruso wrote on 12/24/2004, 11:14 AM
What the heck is going on here? I want all options set to always on. For some reason, my monitor insists on going into saver mode after about 10 minutes. I want it to stay on - don't know if the on/off bothers my renders or not (I think not), but, I want it on, period.

If I navigate to power management, the options are clicked as I want them (Always On or Never [hibernate, sleep, or what have you].

But, in so far as my monitor is concerned, it seems to have a mind of its own.

I'm running XP Pro. As for the monitor, itself, it is a Sony Multiscan 400PS. No saver or sleep settings that I know of on this monitor - it's all controlled through XP. I've run other computers with this monitor and never experienced this problem before.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Right click the desktop go to screensaver select "never" for everything.

Should work.

why do you want your monitor on for the entire time? Do you need to constantly monitor something (no pun intended)? But yeah, like he said, it's in the screensaver section.

I have mine turn off at about 20 minutes (just the monitor). normally I turn the power off when i'm not using it (no, it doesn't kill the power switch!).

Don't forget to check you BIOS settings too. Many PCs have power management at the BIOS level that can also be configured to put the monitor into power save mode, and this will override XP settings.

Thanks, all. I had forgotten about the Display settings. That did the trick.
Happyfriar, I mentioned in my original post why I wanted to disable this feature - but, to amplify my reasons, I'm having some trouble in DVDA2. It is freezing on me. Froze yesterday (while I was away at work) during a render. Proceeded to 99%, then froze. No out but to power off using the power switch.

Today, it has frozen during the burn operation. Sometimes freezes at 16%, sometimes at 98%. I'm using RW discs to minimize waste while I try to figure this problem out. Have posted over on the DVDA2 forum, still waiting some advice there.

I know when I first started burning CD's, having the system as free of miscellaneous aps other than the burner ap (in my case, Vegas Video 3 at the time) was one of the precautions you took to avoid coasters. Guess that is still in my thinking somewhere.

I actually resurrected ENDITALL this afternoon to make certain I catch everything (great little program - seems to work as well in XP as it did in 98).

As I mentioned in that original post, I doubt my screen cycling off (or into screen saver mode) would affect burning at this point, even less likely to affect a non-real time task like rendering - but, when I experience troubles, I reach for old standby solutions as the path of least resistance. I find that often, just running a checklist, you sometimes cure a problem without having to re-invent the wheel.

So, as usual, this board comes through in timely fashion. Aside from being a great source of info for Sony products, I generally get quicker and better answers here about all things computer than I do anywhere else.

Thanks again, and have a great holiday.

Could your HD be powering down? I had simular problems when I ran a DOS BBS in Win95 with power save features enabled. When the HD shut down the BBS would lock up. :(

I'm not sure about the "misc apps" eigther. I've got a TON of games, utils, graphics, audio, video, internet utils, etc. on my system & it doesn't bother anything (I even have Mcafee 6, Asusprop, Openoffice.org Quickstart, Weatherbug, Valve's Steam, D-Link Air, & Spybot Resident running all the time & never have ANY problems. I even use the web whle i'm burning with no problems).

What type of computer do you have? I am working on stuff for someone with a Sony laptop & they have Vegas Movie Maker. When they burn with the watered down version of DVDA that comes with VMM, it ALWAYS kicks any IEEE 1394 devices off the comp (including the DVD+-RW it's burning to). And it's only burning in that DVDA. Rendering & burning with Nero is no problem.

Hey, Happy:
Happy!! (as in holiday).
No, it wasn't my hard drive powering down. Just my screen saver kicking in. Once I set the screen saver option to none, my display stays on as long as I want it to.

As for the problems in DVDA2, I'm still working on them.

I've started working with shorter clips to run tests to make certain everything is working before i fry up a 90 minute render - takes too long only to find out that the process failed.

Thanks again for your response.
