OT: XP Pro Service Pack 2 -> 1394

Hi,

I hope some of the technically inclined members can help me out here. I got fed up with my PC continually locking up and/or rebooting while running V5 under XP Home SP 1a so I bought XP Pro (available only with SP2) and did the reformat/install. Reloaded everything. (SF7, V5, DVD-A, UlimateS, ReelPak, Main Concept, Photo Impact and finally Dr. DivX 1.06)

Things went well until I reloaded Dr. DivX. After that my three 1394 Lacies and Sony DRX 510s started disappearing. Is there any correlation between Dr. DivX and these annoying problems? I unplugged the two Maxtor USB 2 externals and changed the Sony DVD burner from 1394 to USB 2 and, knock on wood, after endless reboots, physically removing then reinstalling the Pyro 1394 card I finally got the connections to the DSR 25 and the Lacie 1394s back.

Is this a Service Pack 2 issue? Are there special drivers or patches I should be looking for? Re-installing XP Home isn't really an option becasue at least XP Pro SP2 doesn't make V5 disappear from the screen, leaving me staring at Stonehenge and not much else.

I found out the hard way that the flaky Matrox RT X100/Premiere Pro 1.5 combo will lock up and crash endlessly under XP Pro SP2 but Vegas & the 1394 card have always been so very stable.

Any suggestions, hints or admonishments?

Peter

There's a patch from uStuff that addresses the 1394 issues.
Bob.

No, that patch didn't help me. It's related to the way the update 1394 drivers identify firewire ports. It's flaky, it's new, and it's a typical M$ fubar.

Found this on the DMN Vegas forum :

"...comparing the 1394 drivers between SP1 and SP2, I noticed 4 out of the 5 drivers had been updated by MicroCRAP. I then replaced all the updated 1394 drivers with the old version 1106 drivers. Rebooting my system and voila, I can properly recognize my Pyro DV Drive Kit. Have I mentioned how much I hate Micro$oft?

Anyway, for those that are interested, the drivers can be found in the WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERS directory. The files to save before you update to SP2 and replace after you do the update are: sbp2port.sys, 1394bus.sys, arp1394.sys, nic1394.sys, and ohci1394.sys. Note that enum1394.sys is the same version in SP1 and sp2.

Hope this helps somebody. M$ should be shot, summarily, at sunrise."

I copied over the older drivers.

It sees the ports now but the data transfer is slower than the second coming.

Did this happen to anyone else?

Any other suggestions for repairs?

If I cannot resolve this issue in the next couple of hours I am going to go to staples and buy some USB HD enclosures and a 200 gig internal drive and abandon using 1394 external drives. I am wasting too much billalble time trying to get this damn thing to work!

All suggestions welcomed!

Windows XP Pro SP2: = Death Star for 1394 users.

My home Vegas PC is a true Pentium P4 with a gig of RAM and top of the line guts. Not a hardware problem. I tried every suggestion and slept for about two hours in the last two days. Finally removed the program drive and replaced it with one I bought yesterday. Reinstalled Windows XP Home SP1a. Installed Sony and VASST software on a physically separate drive. Everything seems to be working again.

Hopefully Microsoft will soon release XP SP 3 because SP2 is a total f**k up.

SP2 cost me a day's pay, 100$ for a new hard drive plus the 300$ for the XP Pro SP2 CD. What an expensive time waster this has been. Avoid SP2 like you would someone with Bubonic Plague!

Maybe it might work better if the PC is connected to the Internet but my Vegas PC has neither an etherlink card nor a modem so that is not an option.

Thanks to everyone for their advice!
