I use Sony Movie Studio so the Acid interface looks comfortable. But I have an Audigy sound card that I use for video capture, and I've read the bad things about it for music editing. If I get the M-Audio mobile pre, will that and Acid allow me to keep my Audigy sound card out of the loop? I am only doing this to help a friend get his original stuff recorded (acoustic guitar, piano), I probably won't do much beyond that. He is hoping I can add some basic bass and drums to some of his songs.

Off topic, I have also been looking at some small recorders, the Fostex MR-8, the Boss BR-864 and the Tascam DP-01 (new, few reviews yet). I've been able to read a lot about these machines so I'm not asking anyone to give reviews, but I think I've figured out these standalone units will do what we want. Will the MobilePre and Acid combo do the same thing? One of the issues with these machines is the quality of the effects, and from what I've read, the Boss (Roland) does best here, the others I mentioned are weak. Would the effects I get from Acid be comparable in quality to the Boss, or do I need something else? If anyone can point me to some good sites that help a beginner who hopes to do this as simply as possible but with some quality, that'd be great. I haven't had too much luck googling these questions so far. Thanks to anyone who has time and knowledge to share.

Which version of acid do you use? Is it acid pro?

I wouldn't buy a sound card or stand-alone recorded for just one project. There has to be a way to get the audigy to work. From what I've read, the audigy can cause problems, but people use it with acid all the time. I'm sure there are audigy users here on the forum that can help you.

It depends. I'm not quite sure how Vegas Movie Studio works but I do know the pro versions of the apps (like Vegas and ACID Pro) let you use and choose multiple audio interfaces. If you're recording acoustic material, I'd highly suggest a pro-level interface like the MobilePre.

The FX in ACID are actually pretty good, especially if you're just looking for something that sounds pretty decent. However, note that ACID doesn't do input monitoring with FX; you're going to have to add the FX post-recording, or record the FX in real time via whatever effects processor you would be using.

You'll probably want to keep everything as simple as possible. With the right interface, you could have everything just about centralized in one place. (Echo's Gina3G is an example.) Such interfaces aren't cheap, but nothing equals peace of mind in my book.

Thanks for the responses. The Gina3G is a little more than I'd like to spend, but I'm seriously thinking about it. I don't mind the MobilePre's price at all.

So If buy one of these, is my audigy soundcard no longer a liability?

Thanks again,
