Recording Audio

grayharp wrote on 12/8/2004, 7:53 PM
I had Vegas 2.0 installed in my computer for a long, long time. Recently my computer crashed due to spyware creeping in through IE. We had to completely re-boot Windows, etc. I re-installed my software, but now it doesn't work! I have a feeling it has something to do with an audio driver.
When I go to record, the Rec. Audio bar is responding, but Vegas isn't recording it. When I hit stop, there is nothing on the audio track. What's going on? Anyone have any ideas? I would REALLY appreciate it. I am a musician and recording is my life... :( :( :(

Did you select the audio device you are recording to? Preferences>Audio

After selecting the appropriate input and putting the track into record ready are you getting level? Seeing the meters move?

We're going to need more info to help you out.

Sorry, I didn't see that someone replied! Hopefully you see this...
Well it seems like it could be Vegas itself. Like something I don't have clicked.. not sure. The meters are moving but no recording is happening. Usually there is like a purple audio track that forms and it's not forming. In Preferences > Audio > Advanced there are two playback devices and two recording devices : Microsoft sound mapper and Yamaha AC-XG WDM Audio. So that's what it's reading as the hardware... I am using an Optimus mixer that is hooked directly into my soundcard. I've been told to hook it into the Line In input, but it only works through the Microphone input. Well, used to work, at least. I am sooooo stressed over this! Anyone help ?

Open your SOUND CARD'S mixer, usually by double clicking the speaker icon in the system tray.

Options > Properties > Recording > OK.

Now you are in the RECORDING mixer, select LINE IN and adjust the fader while viewing the meter in Vegas.

Thank you, that did route the audio through the speaker. However, Vegas still isn't recording it. I can hear it through the speaker, and get a level in Vegas, but the track doesn't record. I hit record, talk or whatever, then stop and there is nothing there. Thanks so much for your help! Any other hints?

You do have the mixer connected to the Line In of the soundcard don't you?

Are you sure you went all the way to the soundcard's RECORDING window and not just the Playback window? Be sure the title bare says Recording.

I remember there's a Routing tab in V 2's Preferences but can't remember the details, check there.also.

Yes, it is hooked into line in and the volume is up on the recording line in bar. Vegas is reading this audio, but just not recording it. I think I had this problem once before when our computer crashed and it had something to do with a driver. All of my audio drivers are updated, or so the Auto Update says. I don't think Vegas is recognizing the external hardware, but I'm not sure how to fix that. I thought it might be in the Control Panel somewhere, but I've tried peddling with it a bit and just haven't gotten anywhere. It feels so hopeless. If you can't help me, that's ok. I appreciate you trying!

The routing has two potential settings... Yamaha AC-XG WDM Audio and Microsoft sound mapper. I've tried each of them and neither work.

I know this sounds a bit obvious, but after you record enabled track and the meter is reading the signal, are you hitting the record button or the play button to actually begin recording? If you're hitting the play button, you are not in record mode. You must hit the record button.

Thanks, but yeah, I'm hitting record. See, that's the thing... I used to record with Vegas all the time before our computer crashed. So I mean, I have a pretty good knowledge of the system and how it works. I am usually pretty great with computers, also. That is why this is just urking me. It's like Vegas just isn't reading the external mixer as a recording device. I'm not sure how to fix that.

What soundcard are you using? Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the soundcard drivers? Can you arrange to use a different soundcard (perhaps borrow one)?

Actually that's a fantastic idea, and probably the solution, but I just don't know which driver(s) to download. I have a Sony Vaio from 1999 so it's fairly new, but I do remember downloading a driver the last time our computer crashed. The reason I don't know which one to download is because it was my uncle who downloaded it, and he's moved miles away now. I'm afraid to download anything offline anymore, because of our computer crashing so many times. We don't even use IE anymore, so that might help. How do I check what soundcard I have? The Windows Update says it's updated but I think it's lieing. ;)

I just loaded an old copy of 2.0 on my computer here at work to see what happens.
It has a soundblaster audigy card in it and runs on XP. It set itself up no problem and works fine.

I didnt' have to do anything at all. Vegas found Microsoft Sound Mapper to do it's thing.
No helpful hints here.

I think its probably time to have a professional tech do some clean up maintenance on your system. It'd be worth every penny IMO.
