When I encode an MP3 file using SF 7.0, the ID3 v1.1 tags have trailing junk characters in the strings. These don't appear in SF or on most players, but other apps show the characters as thought the strings weren't properly terminated. Anyone else see this? Any fix? Thanks.

Try updating to Sound Forge 7.0b and see if that fixes your problem.

What apps are you using that exhibit this problem? The strings should be properly terminated; however extra information can be stored in the remaining space after the terminator (this is how support for the genre was wedged in).

Speaking of genre, why is it that in Sound Forge we have a list of a hundred or so to choose from but what i want is never there? For goodness sake, "Christmas" is missing!!!! What would Santa say????? ;) Why can't we type in any genre string we wish? I can do this in SIREN. So now after building up my Christmas music MP3 collection and saving them all as "Cabaret", i have to go into SIREN and rename the genre tag on all of them and update the tags.

Genre in v1.1 tags is actually a 1-byte numerical code, not a text string (takes up a lot less space). Applications must adhere to a pre-defined list of genre codes.

" i have to go into SIREN and rename the genre tag on all of them and update the tags."

Siren can change the ID3 tags without reencoding the audio? I never knew that, and have been trying to find some S/w that would....here I already have it, I just need to install it.

Now how about giving Sound Forge the ability to import the ID3 tag when you open a previously saved song? I've been working on transferring my entire CD collection to .MP3 and as I'm doing that I'm looking at the CD liners to get all the ID3 information to enter into the tag fields. Afterwards off go the CDs into a box and into storage. A lot of times afterwards I'll find that I'll have to do some editing to a song, when it's mixed with my entire Mp3 collection. So I open the song, edit and resave, but now in that process I lost the MP3 information that I previously looked up and manually entered. The CD I ripped the song from is now archived away, buried in a box with 100 other CDs, the box is in my garage buried underneath Christmas and Halloween decorations, the boxes are stacked right behind my lawn mower and wheel barrel, It's now winter time and it's -20 below outside in my unheated garage. And you guys expect me to go through all that trouble to get my MP3 ID3 tag information?

*Sheesh* ... I'd like to have some speaks with whoever came up with that predefined list and find out what they were drinking that day. ;)

What you don't think titles like "Booty Bass" and "Porn Groove" aren't serious musical styles in that list, where they shouldn't have been listed before something like "Christmas, or Holiday, or Seasonal"? Don't forget the wide sales market of "Christian Rap" that this has over Christmas music titles. I mean, we all have more Christian Rap songs in our music collection than Christmas right? :-)

Red, you can actually change an MP3s ID3 tag by right-clicking on it from anywhere in Windows and going to the summary tag and then 'advanced'. From here you can change or enter the info.

HTH,

Ben
