Subject:Recording audio with effects?

Does anyone know if and how one can record a vocal with an effect (say - a compressor)?
I mean not just monitor the recording with the effect , but to actually use software limiting or compression to get a better signal to disc as I always have done with my outboard compressor, which has lately gone tits up (or down depending on ypour body type)
Many thanks ----- fultro

No.

Even then, using a software based compressor is not going to achieve the same results as an outboard like you have been doing.

You want to "record" the compression before the A/D conversion, not apply it to the 'fixed" signal. With the software compressor, the compression is applied after the A/D conversion. You could loose or really mess up the dynamic range that the compressor is being used to control.

Not that you couldn't achieve some interesting effects in this application, but you may as well record 'dry' and apply the compression post recording. At least that way you'd have the raw recording.

My suggestion:
Repair or replace your bad compressor. A software compressor will not solve the same problem that your external unit was being used for.

Good explanation thanks much

but would it be possible with Vegas's input monitoring option to record with effects while hearing them in real time - like hearing delays and reverb ?
this could be done with or without actually "printing" the effects as far as I am cincerned
I would just like to have the oerformance apossibilities of hearing the effects when recording

If so does Acid 5 have this capability - so far I have not found it

No, ACID does not have software (or hardware) input monitoring like Vegas.

Yes, Vegas' input monitoring allows you to "preview" the FX. It does not permit you to record the FX. (There is really no point, since the sound would be the same after it is applied the raw track and having that raw unprocessed track is something that could prove very useful if you find a better reverb setting later.)
