Subject:Acid 5 - Praise where praise is due

This is for Peter, god knows I give him enough hell for other things.

But I do want to say, this is a remarkable piece of architecture and elegance in workflow. It works as is (no weirdness here to report other than the known midi save bug which makes no impact here because we use external editors from ntonyx for that anyway)

Even the vst support is impressive - though we do not use it - only the vsti portion and the adc is flawless - just like vegas. The errors I'm seeing in the forum with the vt fx aren't much to get down about - steinberg cannot even make their own plugs interoperable - so until they make something resembling a standard I wouldn't worry about swatting another companies bugs for them.

Job WELL done, and well worth the wait for those who had to (us included)

Improved upon a good thing - at a good price and with some real forethought to future proofing. Outstanding work.

Good lord, I sound like a fanboy. But seriously - I believe the entire Acid Team deserves a hand for this. The minor things will surely be corrected as they need to be.

I've been a fan of Peter Haller since about '96 (when I joined the Multisound list). When I heard that he had joined Sonic Foundry I thought it was safe to invest in Sound Forge (buy the program, I mean), which I did.

Another thread tells the rest of the story, so I wont repeat it here.
I'll only say to Spheris that if you say that the bugs and shortcomings that are holding up my work are "minor" then you are really saying that my work is "minor", and I don't like that.

I have no history with Acid. I do not know what great improvements have been made with number 5. And I don't care. Because I expect it to be able to open. edit, play and save my existing midi files, make full use of my VSampler, and create music that is not 4/4. Failing that is not minor to me.

My reply to that is that alot of the shortcomings are looking outside the box intention of the app. I've yet to run into the tempo etc problems some are seeing. The midi save is the only outstanding one I've actually seen in play so far - though I'm sure there are others.

The fx problems I still think are a problem with the fx themselves as they cause similar trouble in steinbergs own apps - depending on the app/versions used.

As for anyones work being more or less major minor - less time interpreting some sort of personal comment from it. More time reporting whatever problems you are finding to Peter and the Acid team. They decide the major minor flaws to adress - it's not me who can/can't fix those things

Spheris,
Instead of withdrawing it in the open, you silently edited your original post, taking out the offending word (at least the one you recognised as one). That counts for something, I guess.

Back to the first post, I agree... nice work all around. Nothing is perfect and for the money we are getting a great piece of software. I use pro tools for my job, and the money you have to spend to get into that area of DAWs is quite a bit more than using Acid5 on a home built PC. That being said, I run into the same amount of problems with pro tools as I do with Acid... In other words all software is not flawless. Good tech support, is key. Digi has it, and Sony is on it's way.

Actually Tor, I corrected what I considered a bad turn of phrase or in this case spelling, I really don't think enough about people and their perceptions enough to edit much of anything except to suit my own concerns. The rest is not nearly important enough for me to care one way or the other. Not to knock you or anyone else but it just really doesn't register on my radar and shouldn't really.

You can ask Peter about that. He'll tell you exactly the same from his own experience.

TorS, i read you other posts and it seems you have learned the hard way that acid pro is not a traditional midi sequencer. it follows a totally different path. i'd recommend getting a copy of mackie's tracktion while they're offering it for free. then you have a traditional midi/audio sequencer and when it's time for you to use a bunch of loops you can rewire in acid 5.

coolout,
Thank you very much for that kind and helpful post.
I'll be trying the Traction thing real soon. I installed it immediately, but can't dig into it right away.

If anyone else are interested,
The free Traction offer is good for the rest of this month. But you have to get to it through one of the mags linked to in this thread
