Subject:AP5 v AP4 v AP3 - advice ?

I am a longtime happy user of Acidpro 3. When 4 came along I immediately upgraded and then ran into lots of problems. This costs me time & money lost so I went back to 3.

I've been on 3 ever since.

So what's the verdict on 5 ? I see this forum flooded with complaints and bugs and nothing much from Sony except a few comments about very particular issues. Does this indict a certain "panic" of Sony about 5 ?

Should I forget about 5 ? Was the last version of 4 very stable ?

I make music for a living and can't afford to waste too much time on buggy software. I also don't want to change hosts unless I really have to (although Sonar 4 looks tempting).

I have installed the demo on my secondary machine and it seems marginal for the cost - lots of new feature I'd never use. I suppose what I'm asking is whether the general "feeling" about 5 is positive now that it's been out for some time.

Thanks for your time.

neanderthal-

The demo is a 30 day fully functional version. Try it out for yourself. That would be the best indicator.

happy mixing,
Jenn

off topic -- well kind of..

Try Traktion from Mackie -- free (a month special), it is wicked nice and has great GUI and can easily create nice loops to work with your ACID...

A5 seems a lot more stable than A4 ever was. At least it is for me. I have had no "reset button" crashes, and no program crashes since I upgraded. Something I could not say for A4. All software is going to have some bugs, and is going to take time to get used to. Try the demo and see what you think.

As I said in my first post I have loaded the demo on my secondary machine just to get a feel for it. But because of all the bad bug reports and the extra services I won't put it on my DAW - that means I can't get a 100pc accurate test....

That's why I wanted opinions :-)

If 3.0 is working, why change? I was slow to change to 4.0 and only later relized what I had been missing (vsti, rewire). I switched to 5.0 immediatly, because of the new features. I especially like the vst effects. But if what you are using is working, keep using it.

I really need better (but not really complex) MIDI editing now and of course 3 hasn't got anything. I'm also tired of switching between applications all the time - I want to do MIDI and audio together.

Also can anyone tell me whether the rendering has improved. In the short time I used 4 I did consider that the sound quality of the render had improved - it seemed crisper. But that might have been delusional.

Any thoughts on render quality in 5 ?

Finally, is there any other OPT MIDI editors that I can load ?

But stability is really what I'm after ...

if ur looking to do midi, seriously, then forget about doing it in Acid. At least, only possible in the most rudimentary level. But that's why the rewire is such exciting potential, because this precludes the need for a midi editor inside Acid at all. As a previous poster says, you can get a FREE copy of traktion and rewire it to Acid 5 and , bingo, you have a very broad toolkit for all your DAW needs..
% is buggy, but I am sure the update will make it rock solid :)

If you're looking for full-on MIDI editing, any version of ACID isn't your cup of tea, mainly because ACID was not designed for that purpose. As marII mentioned, ACID Pro 5's ability to act as a ReWire device opens the doors exponentially for those that do want extensive MIDI tinkering but don't exactly want to leave ACID's looping abilities behind.

Actually, the overall sound quality of media has improved in successive versions—ACID Pro 3 sounded way better than ACID Pro 2, and ACID Pro 4 sounded better than ACID Pro 3 (both in playback and, of course, the resulting rendering that was done). ACID Pro 5 improves on this paradigm with its new beat-detecting algorithm. (If you allow ACID Pro 5 to redetect the beats in a loop (which you can, of course, adjust), it can make a loop sound that much more better.

I've come across an occasional crash here and there, but nothing life stopping. (Actually, it's been awhile since I've last had a crash.) No software is, of course, perfect, especially for a program as complex as ACID Pro...which even got more complex with version 5.

Thanks for the answers. I have gievn the demo a good workout and am feeling so-so.

The interface certainly feels nicer. And the MIDI editing is probably enough for my limited purposes.

But it seems terribly slow compared with version 3. When I drop media onto a track it just sits there for a while "thinking" whereas with 3 it immediately dropped on and was ready.

Also it's frozen for a me a couple of times....

Since the media manager and Native Instr keyboards are both of no interest to me I think I'll wait for the first bugfix before deciding for sure.

Thanks for all the help.

it important to know that the system requirements for AP5 are much higher than AP3. AP5 has about double the features.

In addition to what coolout said, you can disable the Media Manager by going to Options > Preferences on the menu bar and under the General tab, uncheck, "Enable Media Manager." This will make ACID start faster. However, I'd at least encourage anyone to give the Media Manager a shot. It comes in very handy when looking for a specific type of loop (or other media).
