Subject:Preview Loops w/MIDI Keyboard?

Hi, All -

I didn't see this in the manual, so I'm hoping this might be an "undocumented" feature [ ;) ]:

Is there a way to preview loops in AP5 using a MIDI keyboard? This way, I'd be able to preview a loop (that's not part of an "octave" set) in each of the 12 different keys...it would be more efficient than having to keep changing the key and re-previewing the loop in AP5.

If the above is not possible, I'd like to add it to the AP6 "wish list."

Thanks in advance. :)

you want a sampler. acid isn't a sampler. you can use acid as a host for a soft sampler although it's much better suited for arranging loops. i wouldnt expect sony to ever implement such a feature because there already exists many different type of samplers out there already and sony would just mess it up anyhow.

I think you might have missed my point...I'm not looking to playback samples per sé, as with a "traditional" sampler.

First, let's look at the way I preview a loop currently. I click on a loop and it plays ("Preview"). Now, if I want to hear that loop in a different key before I actually decide to add it as a track, I have to click on the Key button, change the key, and then click to Preview the loop again.

Now let's look at what I would like to do. Instead of clicking on a loop to Preview it, I would like to play the loop from a MIDI keyboard. Note that I would not be loading the loop ["sample"] into memory; I would simply be triggering Preview from the MIDI keyboard (instead of clicking on the Preview Play button...thus, this mode would become active if Auto-Preview was off, perhaps). Playing a different note on the keyboard would trigger the selected loop in a different key. It wouldn't matter which octave you play on the keyboard; the loop keys would simply "recycle" up or down the keyboard...after all, ACID has only 12 "stationary" keys, which stay within a particular octave.

This would be no different than triggering Play, Stop, Record, etc. from a MIDI keyboard. This mode would be set on/off in the Options menu. I don't think that Sony would mess this up; they're basically implementing the technology already.

Regards,

yeah i get it and i wouldnt hold my breath waiting to see acid do such a thing, especially since acid is a looping program and not a sampler and what you seek, although not a "traditional" sampler, is still a sampler nonetheless. the best solution for you would to be to get a sampler. i recommend kontakt, or kompakt and intakt.

What you're seeking to do requires mapping across the keyboard which means using a sampler, if each individual loop had all the information for pitch/tempo change embedded the size would have to increase exponentially.

I think what the previous post was stating is that the MIDI implementation with Acid isn't quite up to snuff compared to other MIDI sequencers.

Hi MikeDee:

Just a thought:

This may me a bit inconvienient but have you thought about rewire to another application (or sampler) and then demo the loops from there via KB?

I think you can use intakt, Kontact, or vsampler to load up some samples across the KB, then you could play them in tempo ( i think) as the main song plays back.

never tried this myself. but just a thought about how you "might" be able to do it.

good luck

peace

Ok...now *I* get it...I see why what I'm trying to do would qualify ACID as a "sampler"...which it, of course, is not.

Hmmm...Rahman's ReWire idea is interesting...which would tie into ExtraEcho's suggestion of Intakt or Kontakt, etc.

I'm gonna give this some thought...and, no, I won't hold my breath while thinking. ;)

Thanks much, M'Friendz! :)

you could open up intakt or kontakt as vstis inside of acid. no need to rewire.

You might want to take a look at this plug-in. Try the demo..

Thanks for the info, Rajah. I just ordered the product...doesn't appear to be too expensive. It appears to be a sampler / Recycle- (or Möbius-) like rolled-into-one product.

I'll let you know how it goes....
