I particularly like the new Folder Tracks. This was one of my suggestions via the official SF suggestions page (I am sure I was not the only one that had raised this idea). Acid needed these even more than apps like Cubase, because Acid has separate tracks for loops that would normally be one track - such as variations on a drumloop.

However, the Folder Tracks could be taken a lot further. How about a new "Group Track", that is like a Folder Track, but has its own fader, mute, solo etc controls, and they apply automatically to every track within the folder? This would work well for those times when you throw in 5 or 6 variations on a bass or drum or vocal idea that you ideally want to mix all the same way. Yes, I know you can use a bus to do this - so it should be easy for Sony to combine the folder and bus idea into a new type of track.

Here is another idea. The MIDI editor works well for editing a loop constructed out of MIDI triggers to control a softsynth. How about a similar tool to construct and edit loops that trigger one-shot samples? At the moment, we can build loops by creating a Acid track for each one-shot sample (kick, snare etc) and then render them all to a single track - but then we lose the ability to change the components, and we have to copy and paste to fill the whole length of the song. A "one-shot editor" would be like the piano-roll for MIDI, but would be made up of selected one-shot tracks instead of a MIDI keyboard. This could be built by combining a MIDI piano roll editor with a Group Track. The loops so created would show up as "normal" Acid loops, that could be painted as usual, but they would look different (maybe a different colour). Double-clicking on them would open up the one-shot editor. There would be an option to render to an Acid loop. This would enable us to create new Acid loops in a familiar "drum machine" style of editor.

It seems to be the month for updates - I just got Cubase SL3.

One of the new features is the audio warp tool. This effectively adds the ability to beatmap an audio file with varying tempo - something I would like to be able to do in Acid.

So, to add to my requests for Acid 6.0:

- A tempo track, so we can have continuously variable tempo, not just the marker changes that we have at the moment.

- Variable tempo beatmapping. The way to do this is to allow the user to tap in a tempo with the computer keyboard to create "anchors", then edit these anchors manually to line them up better with the downbeats (if needed), and finally go through a bar at a time checking the results and adjusting as required.

Well, you are certain to get that within a reasonable time, going on previous efforts. Acid 6.0 is likely to be a fair way off ... unless Sony decides to add in some of these features in the next update of 5.0x ... how about it Sony?

Dump .NET and MSDE.

.NET is too slow and buggy.

MSDE is overkill for a local, single-user store of data.
