According to the following thread available at http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=021926;p= it seems to be that Microsoft has used a cracked release of SoundForge 4.5 to release some wav file of Windows Media Player. Here is the proof Pasted from original =================================== File : c:\WINDOWS\Help\Tours\WindowsMediaPlayer\Audio\Wav \WMPAUD1.WAV Length : 354468 RIFF : 354460 WAVE fmt : 50 Format : 0x2 => WAVE_FORMAT_MS_ADPCM Channels : 2 Sample Rate : 22050 Block Align : 1024 Bit Width : 4 Bytes/sec : 22311 Extra Bytes : 32 Samples/Block : 1012 No. of Coeffs : 7 Index Coeffs1 Coeffs2 0 256 0 1 512 -256 2 0 0 3 192 64 4 240 0 5 460 -208 6 392 -232 fact : 4 frames : 349439 data : 354304 LIST : 66 INFO ICRD : 2000-04-06 IENG : Deepz0ne ISFT : Sound Forge 4.5 End bpred idelta (1, 1) (16, 16) ---------------------------------------- Sample Rate : 22050 Frames : 350152 Channels : 2 Format : 0x00010013 Sections : 1 Seekable : TRUE Duration : 00:00:15.879 Signal Max : 21848 (-3.52 dB) Sound Forge saves the name of the registered user to the IENG ('Engineer') field, which means ... Microsoft used Radium's distro of Sound Forge 4.5!!! And shipped the proof with Windows. ================================= |

I think the more likely explanation is that Microsoft paid a freelancer for some sounds, and the freelancer used a pirated copy of SF4.5. |

How do you view that information of a Wav file? |

Any hex editor if you are RIFF savvy. Daubnet RIFFview saves you the effort of parsing it in your head. It's freeware and should be easy to find on the web. It is just the IENG summary chunk as noted. There was a thread on slashdot among other places last week. As noted above, it is circumstantial and doesn't really prove any wrongdoing by MS. All it shows is that "DeepzOne" was the 'licensee' name when the file was created in SF 4.5. J. |

Is very easy to view. Open the file in SoundForge and in the menu File, select Properties. Check the tab Summary and the Extended button if needed. |

Even more surprising is that some of the sounds that have recently been available at the Acid Get Media site seem also to have been created/edited using a Deepz0ne pirated version of SF4.5. If anyone has been collecting the loops from Shockwave-Sound they might like to have a look at the loops called "river adventure loop 1-6" and you'll see they also have the Deepz0ne identification. Maybe DeepZone worked for Sonic Foundry. Hey, it's the new conspiracy theory! ;) |
