I sent the following to Email support after a phone call got me nowhere. I will follow up with support but in the meantime maybe someone here can help me. The person I spoke to at Sony said that they haven't run into any issues with the Media Manager MSDE installlation. I've seen a couple of postings about the problem but I'm not sure if anyone has figured out how to resolve it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If I get an answer from Sony support I will post it as a follow up. _______ Processor Speed: P4 2.6 Version and Build: Latest. Video Card: ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro driver 6.14.0010.6476 Sound Card: Audigy 2 with Driver 5.12.0001.0444 OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 MDAC 2.8 SP1 Direct X 9.0c During the install the MSDE installation hangs. I have waited up to 10 minutes for the installation to complete but it sits at 6 or 7 seconds remaining. At no time does the process become "Not Reponding". If the cancel button is clicked on the installation it changes to say it is rolling back however it doesn't. In fact it never changes the time from 6 or 7 seconds that it hung at during the install. At this point the process has to be killed. Acid is somewhat working at this point as long as the Media Manager is disabled. However, Acid is flaky and has crashed. So with the MSDE install aborted but with Acid 5.0 appearing to be installed I found the following: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgressC:\Windows\Installer\32621.ipi 32621.msi is Acid 5.0 Installer This indicates that Acid 5.0 isn't actually completing the installation. The MSDE Services (MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR and SQLAgent$SONY_MEDIAMGR) are installed but during some installations they work or don't work but never both working at the same time. In my latest installation attempt the application Log shows the following: ----- MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR - Starts Automatically now but didn't originally SQLAgent$SONY_MEDIAMGR - Starts but immediately stops. Event Type: Error Event Source: SQLAgent$SONY_MEDIAMGR Event Category: Service Control Event ID: 103 Date: 11/12/2004 Time: 10:40:01 PM User: N/A Computer: <MACHINENAME> Description: SQLServerAgent could not be started (reason: Unable to connect to server '<MACHINENAME>\SONY_MEDIAMGR'; SQLServerAgent cannot start). ----- Event Type: Warning Event Source: MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR Event Category: (8) Event ID: 19011 Date: 11/12/2004 Time: 10:37:09 PM User: N/A Computer: <MACHINENAME> Description: The description for Event ID ( 19011 ) in Source ( MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: (SpnRegister) : Error 1355. ----- When trying to remove Acid using add/remove the following error is shown: ----- Event Type: Error Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 11704 Date: 11/12/2004 Time: 10:49:10 PM User: <MACHINENAME>\<USERNAME> Computer: <MACHINENAME> Description: Product: Sony ACID Pro 5.0 -- Error 1704. An installation for Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes? ----- After agreeing to the rollback Acid is removed and the inprogress key is removed from the registry. However, MSDE never shows up in add/remove so the services have to be removed manually and the files need to be manually deleted. This includes HLKM\Software references to SQL Server and the SQL Server and Agent Services removed from HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services It is possible to log the MSDE installation but since this is called from within your installer that isn't possible so I can't tell at what point the MSDE installation is freezing. |

Try this... Uninstall both Acid Pro 5 and the SQL in ADD/REMOVE software. After the uninstall, go to PROGRAMS/SONY/SHARED PLUG-INS/ MEDIA MANAGER and completely delete the MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR directory if it exists. Then try re-installing. Mario |

I tried this. The MSDE installation started up and with "4 seconds remaining" hung. At this point the sqlredis process was using 11,244K of Memory and 284K of VM memory but 0 CPU. Clicking the cancel button didn't change the memory or cpu usage and at this point nothing happened. Also no services were created at the point where I had to kill the installation. The following files were present in C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager: addusersgroup.sql AdjustServiceSecurity.exe <DIR> Media Library Templates MediaMgrSqlWrapper.exe MediaMgrSqlWrapper.exe.config <DIR> MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR After killing the install process the following shows up in the app log: Event Type: Error Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 1013 Date: 11/13/2004 Time: 6:13:58 PM User: <MACHINENAME>\<USER> Computer: <MACHINENAME> Description: Product: Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine -- Installation of the Microsoft Data Access Components package failed. As noted in the above post MDAC is up to date and I ran comcheck against it to verify there are no problems. After a reboot the SQL Server registry keys had to be removed. Media Manager tried to start up but failed. This time the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress\ key wasn't present which means the Acid 5.0 Pro install was complete. At this point I'll begin testing Acid to see if it's working. I'd still like to know what it will take to install Media Manager. |

go to the sony setup folder/acidpr5/msde folder do the msdeSetup and msisetup and everthing should work worked for me |

Mine hung here too. Same issues as you. You are not alone. I will try Promix's suggestion. Acid did seem OK but since I am upgrading from 2.0 to 5.0 I can't say for sure whats not working. I imagine that MSDE is for the new Media Manager? If so it seemed to be working in my install. Will forcing the msde install again from the CD manually hurt anything? |

We are investigating this further - you could help us by trying out a workaround. I can't post a file here, but I'm emailing you a batch file that will invoke the MSDE setup with the proper arguments for the Media Manager. It also creates a detailed log during the MSDE setup so that if it does hang, we can tell where that is occuring. |

Bonjour j'ai le meme probleme que vous. Dans ACID Pro 5 le MSDE est une ancienne version. Il faut telecharger la derniere version chez MICROSOFT (MSDE SP3a). Il s'installe correctement mais malheureusement je ne sais pas le configurer. Cordialement Patapain |

here is the deal if you are running win xp pro w/serv pack 1 you must install .net framework 1.1 and then install the .net framework serv pack 1 and then it should load all the way only after i did that did it work and it now works like a charm |

toneranger: There is no need to get the SP1 update for the .net software when running WinXP Home, at least in my case. I never had the .net software on my machine before the upgrade to AP5. |

As I mentioned earlier, I had no problems or hang-ups installing AP5. Already had AP4. Running Win XP Home which did NOT have the .net software. The needed files for install were on the disk that came in the box from Sony. NO service pack update for the .net software was needed for install. What may be hanging up the install, and this will do it for other programs too, is if a virus scanner/checker is running. Some people may have the MS provided firewall running, and that could probably cause the install to hang. It always pays to heed the warnings that come up on screen about disabling any unnecessary programs before installing any software. Jack |

I have the same problem with MSDE installer. Every time I start ACID, the annoying pop-up message telling me that “Media Manager failed to initialize”. Reinstall didn’t help at all. Please help. |

Our support group has the workarounds available and can properly assist folks with when and how to use them. http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/support/default.asp The occasional MSDE hanging on install issue will be resolved in 5.0a. |
