Subject:Sonic Foundry Loops and Media Manger

I have a lot of loop CDs bought from Sonic Foundry. I installed the Sony Reference Database.I haven't managed to find away to get the Reference Library to realise I have these loops. I would have thought it should do so.. How can I get the Reference Library to find the CDs I have?

I thought the media manager could be useful but it seems to be slow. I made a trial database with around 16,000 items. It takes around 10 seconds to search on file name. I've got over 90,000 loops altogether - does this mean it will take over a minute to search them? It doesn't seem any faster than Windows Search.

What I was really hoping for was something that would help me open old Acid Projects. I have a lot of Acd files and the corresponding files have been moved to other locations.. Finding lost files doesn't seem to have got any easier...

I need to investigate further to decide whether there is enough in the upgrade for me.. Does anyone know how long the offer of the free loop CD will last? If anyone has any tips regarding the media manager - I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Hello,

I have a lot of loops as well, 22,000+, and it took about ten to twenty minutes for the first search to add the files to the media library that I made with media manager. I think the best thing for you to do would be to make 3 or 4 separate media libraries to use for you searches. It will take some time to set them up initially, but once that's done it won't take as long again. I would not search all the loops each time, I would divide your folders up into 4 directories and search them separately. The problem I have with media manager is that the tags are too general, for example the RADS loops get about ten different tags, and one of them is Rock Guitars, I don't know why a drum loop would get a tag of rock guitar from the reference, but it does, and for me to remove the tags I don't want on all the loops I have would take a looooong time, and for you much longer with 90,000 loops. I don't know that much about the media manager other than reading the manual (which is a little confusing), but maybe someone else has some better tips for you. It will however identify which libraries your loops come from, but it will also tag some files with other general tags. I hope too that there is a way to make the tags more exact than what they are now.

Edit: I suggest reading the manuals Media Manager section through, maybe even twice as there is much to learn about it. I'm going to read it again so I can catch the things I missed. I'm finding out there is good ways to tag your files to make it easy to find in searches, It's just going to take some time.

Thanks for the reply, Rockitglider. I'll look through the manual (the help files didn't). Will consider having separate libraries but that seems to defeat the purpose of having a library. IAt the moment my concern is to get the SOny Reference Library to recognise that I have Sonic Foundry CDs. I can't get it to do this.

Hello again,

It recognised all my Sonic Foundry loops, and the MM is setup to be able to create several libraries. You'll see what I mean when you read the manual. Good luck with it.

See ya, Rockitglider
