ACID Music Studio 5.0: Root note: <letter>3 -ACID Product Family

Subject:ACID Music Studio 5.0: Root note: <letter>3 Posted by: PinkyT Date:11/11/2004 1:30:20 PM In the Explorer tab, when pointing to various loops, certain information is provided about each loop at the bottom of the window. Example: Audio Loop, 16 beats at 76.4 BPM, Root note A#3 (or A3 or D3 or whatever), 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo... I understand most of this, but what I don't understand is the key3 thing. Why do tracks in G3 sound like they're in the key of A ? What is the 3 for? If it sounds like A, why not just put the A ?

(Could be that the file just wasn't ACIDized properly too.) "G3" refers to which octave that particular root note (in this case, G) belongs in. It usually starts at C0 or C1. Once an octave is reached, the number goes up by one. This is probably best illustrated by looking at a piano keyboard. If your project is set to A, ACID will preview every loop, one shot, or beatmap that has a root key defined in the project key. Try changing your project to the key of D and the same loop will now sound like its in the key of D. The meta-data at the bottom of the screen is telling you that the original key was G (3rd octave) ~jr

I guess that makes perfect sense because key changes can be fully controlled inside ACID. Forgive my ignorance, I am new to ACID and music creation. I really appreciate your reponses.

It does the same thing for tempo so you don’t have to find loops that match the tempo or the key. ACID matches all that up for you under the covers. Obviously there are limitations to how much you can stretch certain instruments but you get the idea. Also if ACID transposes the key an octave higher or lower than you would like, you can always manually pitch shift the loop event an octave in the other direction (use the SHIFT key and plus(+) or minus(-) key to shift in 3rd octave increments). Do this right on the timeline to the event you want to change. ~jr

That’s because ACID is time-stretching the loop for you automatically. If your project is set to A, ACID will preview every loop, one shot, or beatmap that has a root key defined in the project key. Try changing your project to the key of D and the same loop will now sound like its in the key of D. The meta-data at the bottom of the screen is telling you that the original key was G (3rd octave)

That is the beauty of ACID. It does all the hard work so you can concentrate on making music. It does the same thing for tempo so you don’t have to find loops that match the tempo or the key. ACID matches all that up for you under the covers.

Also if ACID transposes the key an octave higher or lower than you would like, you can always manually pitch shift the loop event an octave in the other direction (use the SHIFT key and plus(+) or minus(-) key to shift in 3rd octave increments).
