If I understand what you want to do, it is not possible in ACID. It sounds like you want to automate the filter on a VSTi and ACID doesn’t allow you to automate VSTi parameters. What you are actually doing is adding Pro-53 as an effect. This is not the same thing. You can add Pro-53 as an effect on any audio track but its not like automating the VSTi. It’s just adding Pro-53 as an effect. You have to set the Pro-53 parameters correctly to use it as an effect, which is why you're not hearing anything.

In the Mixer turn OSC A, OSC B, and NOISE all the way down. Turn the EXT IN knob all the way up (It’s to the right of OSCILLATOR B). Now push the HOLD button next to the AMPLIFIER ADSR to hold the ADSR open. You should now hear sounds and can automate parameters like the Filter Cutoff frequency.

It does. You are confusing VST with VSTi. You can fully automate VST Effects. You cannot automate VST Instruments.

Instruments like Pro-53 add to the confusion because they can also be used as effects.

Hello,

The VST Pro 52 has an effect and an instrument, It install both when installing Pro-52 or Pro-53 full version, not Express

Having just re-read your post, the below may not be what you asked, but outlines how to automate a VSTi's cutoff or other continuous controller information. I think you were talking about running a filter plugin on the softsynth, in which case, it sounds like you already know what you're doing, you're just experiencing problems.

You can automate parameters on a VSTi by inserting continuous controller information into the piano roll of your midi file.

To do this, open the piano roll editor, and look at the bottom left corner. It'll probably say "Velocity". Now click the small triangle next to this to open a drop-down menu and select "All continuous controllers". From the given list, pick the controller number that matches the knob you want to automate. You'l probably need the softsynth's documentation for this. For instance, on Xpress keyboards pro53, controller 74 is for Brightness, 71 is for Res. (See p11 of Pro 53 Xpress pdf manual).

Now you can draw in continuous controller info for that parameter.

If you're using a short midi loop, you'll need to copy this out many times in the Piano Roll editor if you want different parameter changes throughout the track, as this info is stored as part of the midi file.

Only problem is, I think ACID Pro 5 may have a bug when editing continuous controller information. I found that when I copied and pasted a chunk of midi data in the Piano Roll, it moved the continuous controller data into the newly pasted area but removed it from the original area, a bit like I'd cut and pasted, rather than copied it. Any attempts to edit the data resulted in th cc info being destroyed. Any new data added to the blank areas just disappeared as soon as I released the mouse button. I'm still waiting to hear back from Sony on this one.

Anyway, for more info, open the ACID 5 pdf manual and do a search for "continuous controller".

Very clever. I didn’t think of that. In applications like Tracktion, you can just create an automation envelope for VSTi parameters just like you can for effects. It’s a much cleaner approach, IMHO, but using MIDI controller data is how it would have been recorded had you changed the parameters in real-time. Still, it would be nice if ACID could automate VSTi parameters with automation envelopes.
