I've been playing around with the new ACID Pro 5, and I'm pretty impressed with it so far. However I did notice a few things that are either bugs or might be improved somewhat. Since I couldn't find a real bug report thread I thought I'd start this one.

If I'm reporting stuff that has already been discovered by beta testers, I apologize. Next time invite me to the beta as well. ;)

BUG - previews are not always played when clicked in Explorer window

How to reproduce: In the Explorer window (with auto-preview enabled) click on a (lengthy) audio file to preview it, and *while it's still loading the preview*, click on another file to preview that.

Result: ACID 5 will continue to load the first preview, but then not actually play it. It also does not load the preview for the next audio file. The program just keeps silent.

In ACID 4, after clicking on the next audio file the program stops the loading of the first preview and automatically loads and plays the next preview.

I preview samples all the time whilst playing the project, and it's rather annoying to have to wait till the entire preview is loaded before I can select another sample to be previewed. Especially when previewing very long samples.
Not only that, since the sample I wanted to preview after all is now selected but not previewed, I still have to press the Play button in the Explorer window before it even starts loading. This really disturbs my workflow right now and renders the auto-preview option kinda useless.

BUG - ACID does not remember soundcard settings after being Rewire Slave.

I have an M-Audio Delta Audiophile (using the 1007 drivers), and I'm using Delta ASIO as my outputs in ACID. When I run ACID in Rewire Slave mode obviously the device driver's changed to the Rewire device driver. However, when I then restart ACID in normal "mixer" mode, I see my device driver has been reset to Microsoft Sound Mapper. So, ACID doesn't seem to remember the soundcard settings I've selected.

That's all the bugs I could find for now. I know, no critical bugs, but annoying nevertheless, especially the first one I mentioned. As for stability, I'm surprised how smoothly it all runs, even in Rewire Slave mode. :)


Finally, I have a suggestion for the Folder Tracks. Great feature btw, much needed. At first I was going to say these folder tracks should have the same options as a Bus (adding fx, group to bus, etc) but then I realized that would defeat the purpose of Bus tracks, along with making things more complicated than neccesary.

But, it would be very nice if one was able to give the folder track a different color, just like regular tracks. I use the track colors as a quick way of seeing what kind of sample it is without having to read the entire track names. Green is beat, purple is bass, red is vocals, that kind of thing. Now this system doesn't work so good anymore.

Oh, and another thing.

When I change the loop region whilst a project is playing, the song starts at the beginning again every time I change the loop range. If this is by design, can you please make it optional? I preferred the way ACID 4 handles it, which is simply continue playing the song without starting at the beginning again. Editing a project is now much less intuitive because of this, imho.

I agree about the last point about loop regions... I've found the same and it is a little frustrating. I've also found that long files don't always preview.

I also found a possible bug in editing MIDI controller information in the piano roll editor... If you create, say a 2-bar sequence that you want to repeat over and over, but with varying parameters on the softsynth, the obvious course of action is to copy the sequence over and over in the piano roll, then draw in the controller info. I did this, however, had drawn in some info before copying the notes. After pasting the data, the controller info moved into the new repetition of the sequence, but was nowhere to be seen in the first any longer. When I drew in new controller info, the info disapeared when I released the mouse button. Worse still, the existing info changed, apparently randomly. Attempts to alter the existing info destroyed it. I couldn't find anything useful in the manual.. It suggested, as I expected , that I can copy this info and move it, however, this function doesn't seem to work. Anyone else found this?

Actually, that may be a bug. From ACID Pro 5's online help:

If you create a new selection during playback, the cursor will move to the start of the new loop region and playback will begin at that point. To adjust the selection without interrupting playback, drag from the center or ends of the loop region.

The sound card issue after ReWire is not a bug.
I too would like Acid to keep both the ASIO and ReWire settings.

I tried the ACID PRO 5 demo as ReWire slave to SX3 and there are some intermittent pops/clicks at the loop points, even when ensuring the fast fade is set correctly. I also tried to change the audio priority between "Time Critical" and "Above Normal" and restarting both applications but this did not make any difference. The same pops/clicks occur at the loop points when slaved to SX2. The pops/clicks occur even when there is no audio near the loop point in ACID. There are no pops/clicks when slaved to the FL studio Demo version. The pops/clicks at loop points are much more common when there is more GUI activity in ACID PRO 5.

Bug report-
ACID PRO 5 crashed many times while detecting my VST plugins...

Bug report-
Loop previewing seems slow/out of sync and I was unable to stop the preview playback in media manager, had to restart ACID PRO 5.

Sidenote-
Disabling media manager doesn't disable the ACID MSDE Service in Windows.

IMO, there should also be a light install option for those that do not want to install MSDE etc.

I am not seeing this behavior with SX2 or Nuendo. (and not in PTools or SONAR 4.)

Could you elaborate on what you are doing?

From what you wrote:

You have some tracks in ACID with loops on these tracks.
You have a loop selection in ACID, that is reflected in Cubase.
When you play, and the play cursor loops on the loop boundaries, you get intermitent clicks in your audio.

Is this correct?

How many tracks/loops in ACID?
Are you using any one shots in ACID?
Are the loops ACIDized files?
Any FX in Cubase or ACID?

What are your audio settings in Cubase? ASIO buffer sizes, VST Engine Expert settings?

What do you mean by "ensuring the fast fade is set correctly?"

What is slaved to FLStudio? (or are you saying FLStudio is ReWired TO Cubase?)

Could you elaborate on what you are doing?

Yes, the pops/clicks occur when ACID is ReWired to SX3/SX2 (using the main MASTER L + R ReWire channels) and there is a track in ACID that has a very fast attack sound (example a fast loud drum) aligned to the left loop point. The pops/clicks are more likely to occur when the track is zoomed in horizontally and vertically, and when the tracks are auto scrolling with the project cursor. When ACID is in standalone mode, the fast fades are enough to prevent the pops/clicks which leads me to think the alignment (between ACID PRO 5 and SX3) is out by one or more samples. The workaround to get rid of the pops/clicks, simply switch off the snap option, zoom in and move the first segment of audio a very small distance from the left loop point, which again possibly points to a problem in sample alignment between the two applications.

Using ASIO native drivers (Marian MARC 2), 800 samples (same as audio card buffers), Audio Priority:High, Preload Amount:2 seconds, LowerLatency:enabled. (all default values).

That means I zoomed in to the left loop point in ACID PRO 5 to check if the fade was enabled because I was trying to find the cause of the pops/clicks.

What is slaved to FLStudio?...

Acid Pro 5

...(or are you saying FLStudio is ReWired TO Cubase?)

No, (no Cubase is involved), FLStudio allows the user to choose "Add one >> ReWired" to bring ReWire channels from ACID PRO 5 to the fruity mixer (FLStudio as mixer application and ACID PRO 5 as ReWire device/synth application.) When doing this, there are no pops/clicks at the start loop point as there are when slaving ACID PRO 5 to SX2/SX3.

I posted this in the ReWire thread, but I am adding it here with some new info (specs).

The pops/clicks occur at start of the loop when looping when ReWired to SX3.

It is reproducable on my system on playback, and even rendering in SX3 produces a "pop" at the start of the loop region-

I just did a test rendering a loop region in ACID PRO 5 comparing it with the same region in SX3.

What seems to be happening is the file rendered with SX3 renders the first 780 samples from the ACID PRO 5 ReWire channels as silent or incorrect, thus producing the "pop" at the start of the loop.

In comparison, the loop rendered from within ACID PRO 5 does not have the problem at the beginning of the loop.

Also, on the SX3/ACID PRO 5 ReWire playback problem, the pops/clicks occur on alternating loop playback iterations. That is, there is no pop the first time it loops, but there is on the second, not on the third, etc.

The pop sometimes comes from a different channel on each alternate loop, which is also strange.

I have also tried all three available driver models including the DirectX full duplex driver and the multimedia driver within SX3 and the same pops/clicks occur when ReWired to ACID PRO 5 demo version as with the native ASIO driver.

My system is-

ACID PRO 5 demo version
SX3 (3.0.0 build 339 - built on Aug 18 2004)
XP SP1a
MARIAN MARC 2 audio card with both native ASIO drivers and WDM (latest 2.09 drivers).
MIDISPORT 2x2 MIDI interface (should not be a factor in this particular problem)
Abit AN7 motherboard, AthlonXP 2400+, 1024MB RAM (none of the components are currently overclocked).

Further background info, SX3 does not cause any clicks/pops with any other ReWire application or VSTi here. The FLStudio+ACID PRO 5 combination does not produce clicks/pops on my system. EnergyXT does not cause any pops/clicks when synchronised to SX3.

EDIT: I have also tried switching off PDC within SX3 (plug-in delay compensation) and it made no difference.
