while im recording guitar parts, after a few seconds the volume drops and it sounds like a flanger effect is on the guitar. it is not the recording program (acid pro 4) because i tryed it with sound recorder as well. i also tryed multiple guitars, amps, and methods of input. they all produced the same effect. if anyone has any advice on what to do please mention it because my computer provider hasnt helped at all.

It could be your soundcard. What's the make and model? Have you tried other drivers (if possible)?

Try also updating your video card's drivers and/or reducing or turning off video acceleration to see if that helps. (Believe it or not, video does account for problems like this, even if they're not video related.)

What operating system are you using? (Windows XP? Windows Me?)

You have to find out the make and model of your video card (e.g., ATI Radeon 9600 PRO), then go get the latest drivers for that particular video card at the vendor's site.

(If you have a system like one from Dell, Gateway, etc., they more than likely might provide drivers for your specific system. Check your make and model of computer and then go to the vendor's site to see if you can track drivers down.)

Right-click a blank area of your Windows Desktop, then choose, "Properties." Click the "Settings" tab, then press the "Advanced" button. Click the "Troubleshoot" tab. You should be able to control the amount of hardware acceleration from here.

Also, try clicking Options>Preferences on ACID's menu bar. Click the Audio tab. You should be able to choose a driver model such as Windows Classic or ASIO instead of the default "Microsoft Sound Mapper" here.

i am using xp pro. thanks for the advice but none of those options worked. i tryed all of them except the update video drivers because i'm pretty sure the drivers on the website are the same ones that are on my computer.

With all due respect, if you are recording audio and you don’t know what soundcard you are using, I would say this could be at the heart of your problem. You are probably using the on-board sound from your motherboard, which is minimal at best and substandard at worst.

If you are serious about recording, get yourself a good sound card. Anything from M-Audio, Echo, or Digidesign will server you well. Avoid game cards the like Soundblaster series as they have cheap A-D converters. You don’t have to spend a lot of money. You can get an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 for $99. You’ll be glad you did.

hey thanks a lot. im looking at two right now and im not sure which one is better for me but this is definetly a step in the right direction. do you know anything about these two?

http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB-main.html

i was actually leaning towards the second one because it seems to fit what i want more, and i like how it comes with the mixing program. and i dont think i really need a preamp.

thanks again (all of you,)
chris

Hello,

Yes that would be a good one to start with, but if you can afford it check out the 410 or the mobil Audiophile in the pro section of thier web site, they are better, but the fast track comes with some neat software too.

USB 1.1 devices will not have as much bandwidth as USB 2.0 or Firewire audio devices but you may not need that much bandwidth if your just laying down guitar parts and adding loops.

I’ve never used either of the two USB devices you pointed to so I can’t comment on them first hand. The MobilePre USB is 16 bit/48Khz sample rate. The Fast Track USB is a little better at 24 bit/48 Khz sample rate but neither approaches the 24 bit/96 Khz sample rate of the M-Audio Firewire 410 (but that’s a lot more money and you would have to buy a PCMCIA Firewire card).

You might want to buy the Fast Track USB from a store that accepts returns and try it out. It seems to be made especially for guitar players so I’m sure you’ll put the software to good use as well. It will be better than what you have and if it sounds good enough for your use, then that’s all that really matters. I would just test it out with lots of tracks to be sure it can handle the bandwidth you plan to throw at it.

> do they even make computers with usb 1.1 anymore?

You never said how old your laptop is so I assume nothing. I also didn’t see anywhere on the Fast Track USB page that said it was USB 2.0 compliant so I can only assume it’s a USB 1.1 device. This is just a guess on my part and I could be wrong but I’m just reading the web site. You might want to contact M-Audio sales and ask.

The Fast Track is, indeed, a USB 1.1 interface. (The manual mentions this. Funny (or not funny) how M-Audio doesn't on their Web site.)

You should be OK if you work solo for the most part. If you can opt for USB 2.0 or FireWire, go for that instead.

my only problem with that is that the fast track has the editing software. i dont have any other programs like that. if i just used the other ones and went through my amp it wouldn't sound as good as it would if i were using the software, my guess would be.
