I found this on a post here --

Every problem I have ever had has been due to a utility like Norton Antivirus, which thought Reason 2.5 was a virus, and I couldn't even get it to accept it manually. Also, I have had problems with Norton Recycle-bin Protection, which, in my opinion should be turned off no matter what.

** ** Anybody else have compatibility probs with Norton? Is Virex better?

Any other known compat issues? (I could save alot of money by not buying the offending software in the first place. I have HUNDREDS of dollars in software that just sits on a shelf, because it conflicts with stuff, doesn't do what its supposed to, etc.) Of course, once you buy software, you're stuck with it, so if anybody knows ANYTHING, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

(I had so many troubles with Symantec, that eventho I bought their entire package, I only installed Virus Checker & the Firewall.)

Because of so much challenge-response software I finally had to put my daw online. I'm using Norton Internet Security and it works without any problems at all with Acid, Vegas & SF6 (among others).

I find Norton products to be extreme bloat-ware. I stopped using them a long time ago.

I use AVG Free antvirus from Grisoft. It does an excellent job and only has a 1.7K memory footprint. Panda software also makes an excellent antivirus product.

You really shouldn't have Norton or any other utility, on a DAW. Optimally you should have only Audio Appz, and employ another resource for Internet, gaming, etc. Either partition your HD or use another computer.

Yes, yes, and we should all love each other and never get mad. But if you operate a lot of challenge-response apps (most decent soft-synths these days are CR !) then you're forever swapping floppies or whatever just to activate and upgrade.

That is unless you use warez. Then no problem.

When the ilok issue with Waves (2.5 & 3 I recall) was causing so many problems, some even requiring reformatting OS drives, I took the advise of a few others and found some good cracks of the Waves bundles I owned. I used these and had no problems whatsoever and would still do it if I had to be on line a lot (which I don't). The software makers obviously have a right to *attempt* to protect their product but none of the strategies so far have shown to prevent pirating at all. Mostly they are just a pain in the ass for registered owners.

I haven't had any problems with Norton, and I have used it and Acid since Acid was released. It may be a bit of bloatware, but being able to update virus and security issues weekly or monthly is a great asset with Norton. Ideally your DAW should be by itself on its own computer.

Your best bet in a DAW situation is to get a PC (or use an existing one) for the sole purpose of doing things like scanning files for viruses. (I'd go the hardware route for a firewall if concerned about security over broadband.)

If you don't have that choice, go with solutions that use little resources like JohnnyRoy mentioned. Most of the big-name vendors like Symantec and McAfee are producing apps that are so intrusive to your system it's an insult to those who don't want all that hand holding at the sake of performance.

I remember when McAfee's VirusScan would take very little system resources and would come up only when you called it. Very sleek and fast. Not anymore. It's like these apps are devolving.

The reason is Norton utilites are made to work, i mean:
If you use diskdoctor , your disk will need to be "cured";
if you use antifreeze (or some like that) , your applications will freeze
and so on and so on... you will need to use that utilites, you understand i hope...

Stop using this software please! And Sorry For My Bad English :)
