Subject:Acid 5... the positives

All the complaints about A5 seem to be about requested new features that were not implemented.

If you check the Cubase forums most complaints are about outstanding bugs that still haven't been fixed.

We've got it lucky here.... Acid for me is rock solid, has crashed maybe twice in 2 years, and never with a loss of data. The development team listen to what we say.... and this is frickin' Sony, not some bedroom programming team like Tracktion (not to detract from Tracktion).

It does what I want, and is my preferred working environment. If you don't want Acid 5, don't buy it, or am I missing something?

mmm.... don't see many takers on this thread... let's just moan on about how acid 5 doesn't support 248 bit zxc export shall we?

What? You mean to tell me that ACID doesn’t support 248 bit zxc export? I just purchased a 248 bit zxc player. What am I supposed to do now? If I can export to 248 bit zxc it that’s it. I’m outta here. What were those Sony guys thinking? ;-)

On a positive note: ACID 5 has quite an impressive feature list with a little bit for everyone. (except maybe the MIDI diehards). For me, the multi-port VSTi support is worth the price of admission. Now I can run Kontakt with 4 separate stereo buses out. Sweet!

yes, i'm pleasantly surprised with the new features as well. Iacobus posted a thread a while ago about the new features for ACID Music 5, and me, thinking it was for ACID Pro 5, was dissappointed by the pityfully small list. but the real list is more like it!

the only thing that could go wrong, imho, is that the program is unstable because of all these new things. on the other hand, i've never had real performance problems wih ACID, even not with version 1.0. and when Rewire support was added somewhere in 4.0d or so, it still ran flawlessly. so i'm not really worried about that. :)

JR, all is not lost... you can still insert a Quark adaptor as a VST effect in the Acid Pro 5 stereo output and it will send a stream in 248 bit zxc directly to all 496 outputs on your soundcard. Now if Sony could just implement temporal streaming, I'll be happy - I really like being able to listen to future music that I haven't made yet. I also hear that Cakewalk are planning to introduce a new "clone user" function, for when two hands just aren't enough - that would be awesome!

I don't know what you are talking about with temporal streaming. Sounds like Star Trek to me.

But, personaly I was a little disapointed too that the 248bit zxc export wasn't included. I think the reason that the Sony programers didnt try to integrate it directly into ACID 5 is due to the available band size of the SIMD buffers on most CPUs. It's a shame that Intel didn't think ahead when designing those extensions. Maybe when the new the 64bit Windows becomes main stream and ACID is compiled to 64 bit then the 248bit zxc export would work without spending a day and a half on memory swapping to prevent a buffer overload. Until then I guess we'll just have to leave the 248bit zxc stuff to the high end RISC processors or a dedicated accelerator. Sony is probably taking the same stance on this as they do with Vegas being CPU only with no accelerated video support.

So, on the plus side, the folder tracks look totaly cool. It should really help with larger projects and I can't wait to try it. Also, I hope this is a glimpse of a similar implmentation in the next Vegas.
