I have music training and a midi keyboard and some free loops but I just don't know where to start in my quest to create a movie soundtrack. Need some hefty and detailed books written by thoses who have done it. Any leads? Where did you guys learn?

I hooked up with local film makers and students. I interviewed them to find out what they were trying to achieve with the film; what kind of emotions they were going for etc. Sometimes they have an idea for a particular style or even some CDs from other artists during certain scenes. Sometimes they don't.

Once I have spoken with the film maker and have at least a partial understanding of what they want to accomplish ... I start writing. Sometimes I just play piano while watching a particular scene. Sometimes I have an idea for a scene before I even play the piano.

> Rudy Sarzo's book...

Actually, its a DVD but I agree with Mario that Rudy Sarzo’s training DVD ACID® for Non Linear Editors is an excellent source of information on building soundtracks for video. It doesn’t cover MIDI however. You can read my review of it at the Digital Video Editing web site to get a good feel of what it covers. I highly recommend it.

Pre Announce: Iacobus and I have been working on an ACID book for VASST called Instant ACID from CMP books. It’s not available yet but, like the other books in the VASST "Instant" series, it will be a very graphical and task oriented guide. It will also cover MIDI and Audio recording so it’s a good addition to Rudy’s DVD which mostly uses pre-recorded loops.
