Subject:VOB Format with Vegas??

Hi, I'm brand new to Sony vegas. I bought a 3CCD Canon XM2 that I used extensively whilst traveling Asia with my wife. I have now recorded this all onto DVD in an unedited format. The quality is outstanding but I want to try and make this an edited, professional DVD.

Here's the thing....I went out and bought this Sony Vegas 5 and it seems it'll edit alright - just not VOB files from DVDs?? I have spent hours trying to figure out if I've missed something and my eyes now hurt.

Can anyone tell me if I can simply edit .VOB files from a DVD - with the audio as well (audio is in AC3 format)

I am desperately trying to keep this SIMPLE!!!! I'm fed up with software that requires converting files, multiplexing and de-multiplexing, converting audio to .Wav etc. Why in Gods name would anyone want to convert high quality DVD .Vob files into Avi files anyway??? The quality would degrade and it takes ages.

Sorry to go on about this but 6 years after DVDs hit the market and software companies are still wanting to complicate things - KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!!

If Vegas won't work, can anyone point me towards some software that will??? To confirm - I am trying to edit VOB video with AC3 audio. Almost all DVD recorders bought in the shops record in AC3 format, yet very few software packages allow for compatibility with this audio format. Thanks in advance.

well it is simply because VOB are mpeg files and mpeg files are not considered really suitable for editing..

the same goes for ac3, which is a highly compressed lossy format not suitable for editing ...

there are workarounds in both cases - but ..........

VOB files are not high quality, they are compressed files containing MPEG-2 Video and MPG Audio.

You do not get a quality drop turning them into AVI, but you will take a huge hit when they get recompressed.

The camera you bought is not suitable for what you want to do.
You need a DV cam at the least.

I am sorry to say this, but the makers of all these cameras are cashing in, and the product is strictly for a WYSIWYG use.
If it were possible to edit these and keep quality high, why would film people bother with the more expensive formats? They wouldn't.

You want Pro quality, you need Pro gear.

Actually, the Canon XM2 is VERY suitable for DV editing. I know this to be true because I also own one. I have done many DVDs with outstanding quality with my camera.

So, if I have this right, you have previously transferred the original DV tape footage from the camera, to DVD. What happened to the original DVD tapes that the footage was shot onto? Ideally, if you still have the original DV tapes, you would need to capture them via IEEE1394/FireWire/I-Link to your computer. Then, you can edit without quality loss.

If not, you could run the outputs from a DVD player to your camera, and re-tape it in real time, back to the camera. Some DVD recorders will allow you to send it to a DV Cam, digitally, and then you could capture the footage via FireWire to your computer. You may lose a small amount of quality, but probably not enough to notice.

you could just rename the .VOB files to .mpeg

then vegas will recognise it and you can edit

why post to a thread from almost a year ago ?

anyway - renaming a vob file doesnt always work, plus if it is ac3 audio (most likely) ,it will not have any audio in vegas ..

renaming doesnt work on complex branching, multiple angles, multiple audio tracks , sometimes if subs are in vob and also also a few other reasons, sometimes it works just fine also

you think that could help me with my next question? i have some short videos on my files and they are in .avi format but when i try to play them with vegas movie studio i just get the sound, and it says tha the video stream attributes could not be determined
