Inserting (*.txt,*.sub) subtitles problem with DAR

dejanc99 wrote on 10/7/2004, 2:00 PM
My problem is in import option for subs. When I try to import subs ( *.sub) into a movie I get the following message: Warning: An error occured while opening one or more files.
The reason for the error could not be determined.
And no subs are inserted into a movie.
If I do the same with subs in *.txt format then the message is:
Warning: Overlapping events have been discarded.
And in that case subtitles are displayed (in preview option) but i only see line 1 of the subs. and not sub line 2 (on a multi-lined sub)....
Instead of: No, 'tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a

church-door; but 'tis enough,'twill serve: ask for

me to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man.
My subs look like this: No, 'tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a
What am I doing wrong?

What are you using to create the subtitle files that you're tring to import?

What file type did you choose in the Import dialog box? (Not just what extention, but what file type...DVD Studio Pro? Vegas Region List?) This might not make a difference, but maybe it does.

Each subtitle format has a specific layout that it uses, so DVDA expects the text file to be formatted a certain way. Some have a start and end time for each event. Some have a start time, end time, and duration for each event. Some have blank lines between each event, some do not. Some can have line breaks, some cannot.

And some just plain aren't compatable with DVDA.

I use subtitle workshop to create a subs.
My logic is to to rip subs (english) with SubRip then replace them in SW with serbian and put them back in with DAR.
In SW I save my new subs as adobe encore file so they look like this:
00:02:14:26 00:02:16:26 The Hovitos are near.
00:02:18:07 00:02:20:15 The poison is still fresh,
three days.
00:02:20:17 00:02:22:05 They're following us.
But DAR just doesn't show the second line of the subs (three days.)

As far as I've been able to tell, none of the formats produced by Subtitle Workshop are compatible with DVDA's import feature.

The "MAC DVD Studio Pro" and "Sonic DVD Creator" formats have worked just fine for me.

Well, look at that. I guess they do work.

I guess I was remembering trying to export subtitles from DVDA, editing them in Subtitle Workshop, and then exporting them again. SW doesn't seem to like any of the formats that DVDA produces.

The "MAC DVD Studio Pro" and "Sonic DVD Creator" works fine for me also.
Now, is there any easy way to change font and size of subtitle events (all 1042 in my latest movie),
or I'm gonna have to click on each and every one of them in the time line to edit that small arial,14 (default).
For your help so far, thanks a lot.

Got all the subtitles imported into DVDA?

Got one of them formatted the way you want all of them formated?

Then right-click that one subtitle event on the timeline and choose "Apply Formatting to Selected Tracks." Done.

OK Rob, now everything works just fine.
I'll buy you a beer, if you ever come to Belgrade.
Thanks again
