Vegas and Avid TV production??

Hi,

I have a question regarding a workflow and compatibility issues between avid and vegas.

It is a 45 minute TV show. Shot in Beta SP, then digitized on Avid Express.
Is it possible to import and edit this in Vegas ( offline ) then when done
it has to go back to the on-line Avid which is Avid Media Composer ( if done in house ) or whatever the newest Top of the line Avid is ( another post production company ).

Does anybody have real world experience with something like this?
We know it can be done using FCP ( although not without some pains ), but would prefer to stick with Vegas if possible and there are no problems with fiule formats and EDLs or whatever else could come up.

Thanks

If the footage has already been digitized by any AVID, not possible.

If you captured the video, downconverted to DV, straight into Vegas (either via DV dubs or using a converter like the new SD-Connect), then yes, this would work. Capture, edit, export edl in Vegas, finish in other system.

Wouldn't that affect the quality ( downconverting to DV ) since it is originally shot in Beta. Or is there a way to still use Beta footage on-line ( through edl or whatever and downconverted DV is used only as a reference.

I don't think DV quality is acceptable in this case. It has to be Beta quality in the final product.

Beta-What? Beta SP? SX? Digibeta? If it only has to be SP, then you'll see near zero difference "down-converting" to DV. Lots of us print to Beta SP, lots of Vegas stuff goes to air via Vegas to Beta

It's Beta SP.

So, we'd have to digitize one version for use with Vegas ( Screenalyzer I guess would do ), and then digitize Full res Beta SP to Avid for on-line use later on.

After everything is edited in Vegas we could export edl and use Full ress on-line footage?

Sorry if I'm asking what seems to be a stupid question, but I have no experience with Vegas/Avid and all this mixing of offline and online between 2 Applications. And on-line has to be done on Avid and with Beta SP footage ( I have no choice in that matter, I only have a choice of editing app )

You can export a CMX 3600 EDL from Vegas which the AVID will open.
It's not a stupid question, it's a very valid one and one that is asked a lot. See the thread currently above this one, it's related in terms of the quality of DV vs Beta.
It would be helpful if Vegas had OMF or AAF capability, but with the 3600 EDL, you should be fine.

OK, thanks Spot.

We'll try a test clip in the next few days.

SPOT!!

If you have any inside info from the Vegas writing team.

Do you know if a OMF and AAF import/export function is on the drawing board for the next upgrade?

It feels a bit strange to have left this function out in a program, trying to compeete with Avid and Adobe. Like they left CD text out in CD Architect5.0
