Vegas as a multitrack analogue to Forge?

Snappy wrote on 9/18/2004, 6:49 PM
If I really like the way Acid and Forge behave, and I find myself looking for a robust multitrack mixing/recording program, you think I'll like Vegas?

I've used SOTA Pro Tools systems and I find their hotkey systems/speed-of-use/ease-of-use/presentation to be pretty dang clunky compared to the thing of beauty that is Forge. So... is Vegas going to be like using SF but in a multitrack sense?

Any comments would be much appreciated!

Is there a demo I can check out somewhere?

THANKS!

Vegas demo available here: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=503

I would say it's more like using ACID than Sound Forge. While it's got most of the power of Sound Forge, it's method of mixing, slicing, and dicing is ACID style. It's a lot freer than ACID though. Try it for yourself and see.

I currently use both Vegas and Cubase (depending on project) for multitrack editing. Sound Forge for mastering, and CD Architect for making final Cds. I use Vegas when I have less tracks and more track editing and do not need midi. I use Cubase when I have lots of tracks with midi. I kind of like the mixer on Cubase when I am dealing with projects with large number of tracks. I like to do track edits in Vegas. It is easier and more stright forward to edit tracks in Vegas. Vegas currently does not have midi capability, so I have to use Cubase for any project with midi tracks..

Almost. You will know your way around, and it's the basic same feel and look. But it's not really SF in multitrack mode. Close enough tho.
The only thing I miss is a real mixer.

MrPhil: what about Vegas isn't a real mixer?

I agree, plugin a control surface and how much closer to a real mixer can you get?

farss: are you using a control surface with Vegas and if so, which one?

Thanks,

What I mean is I'd like to have a graphic layout of a mixer, with all used channels, something like this:

http://www.sydec.be/App/Content/?ID=6376e417-0afb-4b24-b77c-f6653fddbbbd
http://www.samplitude.com/de/grafix/v7_mixer1_big.jpg
or
http://www.cakewalk.com/products/SONAR/console.htm

It's not something that makes any big difference, but sometimes I'd like to mix without lookin at the waves, thereby only listening to what comes. It's just a personal thing.

Please explain! is there something I totally overlooked here??
Or do you talk hardware?

thanks for the input, all!

the thing I am actually most interested in is the hotkey & mousewheel capabilities when making edits. Can I use mousewheel to zoom in tight on a spot in time? Use SHIFT+arrow keys to zoom amplitude?

Other than that, if everything worked just like Acid, that would be fine for me too. I use that program a ton.

Thanks again!

One thing I like about Cubase is the on screen mixer. I like Vegas for editing, however I think it would be nice to have a mixer similar to Cubase in Vegas. I tend to us Cubase for all my projects where I am controling a large number of tracks and doing minimal editing and a lot of mixing. I use Vegas when I am doing a lot of track editing.

I don't see anything wrong with a mixer that flows horizontally rather than vertically. I have gotten quite used to it, and I like that I can see the waveform in the mixer view.

It's all good.

Well, I started using Vegas for Audio instead of Sonar, origally vegas was just for video. It may not be as close to a graphical representative of a mixing board, but an hour or two with it and you'll forget all about the side by side channel view. Also, I use a Focus Command Post as a controller, which costs about 20 bux on ebay. It's a flat controller with a jog shuffle knob, a joystick and about 15 different buttons you can customize to work as shuttle control or other features in vegas. It's usb, hassle free, and indespensible when I am working on a keyboard part as my keyboard is about 10 feet away from the monitor. At that price, I picked up 2 spares just in case :)

Hello,

I picked up the Focus Command Post, but I am having problems getting it to work with Vegas. Is there a control file / script file that I can download for it somewhere on the Internet?

Thanks,
Rob
