Subject:Sound Forge 5.0 updates?

Anyone recall if Sony had an update for version 5.0 (build 117)? I haven't got around to updating my DAW, so I'm still using this version and just had to reinstall. I'm sure I have updated it before, but there isn't anything on the update page for my version. I've emailed for support, but no response yet.

Thanks

I don't have the info you are requesting but yes, it is odd that version 5 is the only one omitted from the update list??

Yeah, I thought there was an update I did. I had problems with the graphics on waveforms before that I fixed with an update. Edits such as normalize would often not display correctly until I did another edit like dc offset, etc. I'm back to that problem after the reinstall, and I have a new video card, too. I'm pretty sure there was a version 5.0b

The latest update for Sound Forge 5 was "soundforge50f_bld259.exe" but it's no longer available on the download page, indeed.
It's very strange because older products are still downloadable.

If you've got no answer from Sony customer support, try searching the web and you can find a link like this one.

Djipy - thanks for the link. I still haven't gotten a response from tech support. Very strange that they wouldn't have a SF5 update when they have older versions.

I'm going to wait for a bit to see if tech support responds to me before I try updating from an alternate site. Will I potentially run into registration issues if I wish to upgrade in the future if I update from this link?

Thanks,

Larry

If you have successfully registered your 5.0 version in the past, installing updates does not need any new registration.
Make sure to keep your serial number on a safe place. As you probably know, if you change your operating system or reformat your hard disk, you need a new activation key. That key is given when you run the registration process.
Updates (5.0a - 5.0f) can be registrered like the initial release, there is no difference.

One advice: download the update from the alternate link right now (what if that site went down ?)

Just to be sure, I can check if the file on the alternate link is the same as the official update I backed up at that time. I will post the information here as soon as possible.

I already downloaded and saved the update from your link on a different pc. I assume I can burn a cd and load it to my daw later? Thanks for the attention, djipy...if only Sony could be this attentive. As a Sound Forge/Cd Architect/Vegas/Acid cust, I'd hoped for a response by now. If they don't plan on supporting older versions, I can accept that I guess. But it baffles me that I could go and update older versions of Sony/Sonic Foundry apps...

Yes, you can load it from the disc you burned without problems. That's assuming of course that there are no corruptions or problems within the downloaded file (which happened to me quite awhile ago when I downloaded Vegas 3 to disc for later installation on my DAW.) I was having a problem with Vegas and the SF tech had me download again (same version and build) directly to my DAW and the problem was fixed. The tech assumed that the file got corrupted somewhere in the process – either downloading or burning. This is not a common thing but it happens.

Good news !

I have compared the file downloaded from the link with the file from my archive CD (downloaded directly from Sonic Foundry at that time) : they are identical.

So, you can install the 5.0f update without any fears.

FYI - Sony has responded and stated that due to technical reasons 5.0 can no longer be reregistered or updated. They are offering me a free upgrade to 6.0, which sounds good to me. I am assuming 6.0 is ok with Win 98SE. I know most of you guys (unlike me) have moved into the 21st century with all of your apps. Do you recall what enhancements were made between 5.0 and 6.0? Anything to worry about installing 6.0 and it's application under Vegas 2.0(!). I'd hate to install it only to find I have trouble opening any of my projects in Vegas, 24 bit masters or 16 bit files.

Thanks again,

Larry

Yes, Sound Forge 6 works fine on Win98SE (note that version 7 needs XP - any attempt to install it on Win98SE will abort).

Version 6 is far better than 5, especially for its non-destructive edting. It's overall faster for editing process.

I ran SF 6 and Vegas 3 on 98SE without problems (still have this system running but its retired from the studio).

SF 6 doesn't handle compressed wave files as well as SF5. It wants to create a 'proxy' file which is the decompressed PCM equivalent and use that.

SF5 and Vegas 2 just do the 'peaks' thing and go from there with the internal audio data. Much faster when I've got many files to process.

SF5 ALWAYS created a proxy for compressed files. It was the "temp" file. You could only open uncompressed .wav in Direct mode.

SF7 will read most compressed formats directly, only decompressing portions needed for edits. Some formats and files don't behave properly or seek accurately, which is what the "Always proxy compressed formats" pref is for.
