Subject:Latency/synch prob recording audio

Greetings.
I`m using Acid Music Studio 5 on a DELL desktop (2.7GHzIntel4 processor,160GB drive (single partition), 1GB mem, Win XP, SoundBlaster Live 24 card).
When I record audio (guitar source through the SB card), on playback there`s a compounding amount of latency in relation to the drum track. i.e the audio gradually falls out of synch.
I`m recording at 44kHz/16bit, so a 30 second mono file is around 3.5 Meg.
Dropping the recording properties to 11Khz/8bit improves the latency prob a little, but obviously the quality is to say the least quite horrible. Anyway, I would have assumed the pc would be able to stream a 3.5 Meg wave file no problem.
Can anybody please help... At the moment I`m reduced to chopping audio tracks to 1Meg bites and piecing it back together over several tracks (which is annoying).
Thanks in advance (I checked the previous posts for this type of question, but couldn`t find any answers).

Try 16-bit/48 kHz. If you have the Live, this is what the soundcard does internally.
