So, First I just wanted to say that I visit the ACID forum about once a month (I'm a video user mostly) and am happy to see that there's still a recent ACID 5 thread going on. Seems like there has been a fresh 5.0 thead in here since about January. I was wondering if anyone knows what group of programmers are on ACID 5. Surely they haven't been working on 5.0 for the last two years. (wasn't 4.0 released August 2002?) Is that sort of information top secret? When I was sitting here theorizing on what they were working on, I thought that maybe SoFo must have moved most of the group to work on the CD Architect release. But then realized that CDA 5 was released only three months after ACID 4. After two years worth of programming, either ACID 5.0 is going to be a kick but release or else they've been working on other things. Anyone know? I'm always facinated by the inner workings sort of stuff. JBJones |

Hmmm. A full rewrite could be the reason for the delay. Right after Vegas was released they were talking about a great deal of code rewriting that was needed to update the interface for full Windows XP features. JBJones |

Joel and Peter have mentioned that they are working on ACID Pro 5.0; they just can't say what will be in the new version at this time. It's the same team from Sonic Foundry that's working on all the apps in the family, that much I do know. Uh-oh, I'm feeling it coming... mu...mu...muhahahahaha... I've been looking around at all the sub $1K audio/midi software. I plan on purchasing one soon but can't decide. The top four seem to be Sonar, Reason, FL Studio, and Live 4. I'm not looking to start an argument about comparing apples and oranges, the preceeding is my top list based on my needs and readings. Funny, each of those have its strengths and weaknesses, but none have the intuitive multi-track gui that I have come to really enjoy using Acid DJ--the last thing I want is to be moving around virtual wires to configure stuff to work. I just want to throw everything on an infinite multi-track timeline, and edit/play/record on the fly. Acid 4 seems to be one of the least appealing due to what I've read about lack of reliability, latency, shaky VST compatibility etc. If they made those three points rock solid I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it, the last thing I want to do is learn a new program. With Acid there is no learning curve, its completely intuitive. However, I own Vegas 4 and Acid DJ, awesome programs both. So, I may just wait for Acid 5. Since there is no leak about beta testing I can only asume its debut is still far off, bummer. Although, the free upgrades for life from FL Studio is very attractive... Oh well, the wait keeps my wallet fuller. |

Wait for AP5 - that's what I'm doing. But FL Studio is also an excellent companion to Acid. Great for making Acid loops. I also use it as the VST host and record audio into Acid from there. FL Studio 5 should be out in December and there has been a lot of talk about it's improved audio handling. The developers recently said on KvR that with FL Studio 5 and its excellent audio pitch & stretch routines "Acid will be redundant". Well, let's wait & see :-) |

At the risk of starting another battle, I need to say that acid 4 has been very solid for me. Vstis work well for me and are solid. I'm sure you can find exceptions - synth edit stuff is sometimes flaky. But I've used it daily for my main app since acid pro 3 with no issues. Now I do use it for it's strength, looping, and I know everything else is secondary to that (i.e. I would love a more involved sequencer), but I take it for what it is. And I have no stability issues. I'm sorry if you do... don't know why... but I don't. |

Hey -- FLTSUDIO is awesome -- it does so much and it loves my Native Instruments Bundle -- I use it in tandem with AP4.0f. There is no way Acid will be useless -- it is just to cool to replace. But I think it needs to catch onto some newer features -- like better MIDI !!!! Geepers Creepers -- everything is MIDI, so pease improve midi editor. |
