Nice idea, but it seems a little pricey for not including a hard drive.

Yes, it does seem to be priced a little high. Interested to see what it will sell for on eBay.
I bet the reason for no HD is the noise issue with built-in stereo mics.

Very nice – and I agree, a bit pricy. A 2 gig memory card runs well over $200–more like $250 (which certainly would be needed for any serious 24 bit recording). So, with a 2 gig card this would push it to probably around $600-700 street price?

Am I missing something here? What market is this aimed at? $600-$700 to bootleg concerts?

I would say news interviews would be a possible market... Other than that... dunno.

Yeah, but the price of the recorder AND the high capacity cards is going to be down by next summer.

JFYI, here is the response I got when I emailed Edirol to ask if the unit would support 4GB CompactFlash cards:

"We haven't yet tested a 4GB card with the R-1. It's a bit academic at this
point as they are currently the same price as the R-1. There is no file
system size restriction that would keep the R-1 from recognizing a 4GB Flash
Card, so we presume that we will have successful tests. But as I said,
currently, it is untested.
I hope this is helpful.

If the cards exist, it's hardly 'a bit academic at this point'. No brownie-points for scientific curiosity (or mere engineering competence) for Eddy on that one...

Very cool gadget. It is unusual and new enough that I am glad you mentioned it. Typically electronics are heavily discounted from the list price, so let me guess it will sell for about $350 to $400.00. But of course the last 4 digits in the price will have to be 9's :-). ( If it is considered pro, then maybe not so much discount.)

I used to record seminars with a portable Marantz semi-pro cassette recorder that is the size and weight of a notebook computer. This new gadget is soooo much better. The Marantz was about $400 in 1980's. That may be $1000 present value for the money, while the present value of the Marantz is about $100.
