I somehow found this article on the web. It looks like a chapter excerpted from a book. It is about acid 3.0, but I think it is a good intro into midi and acid. It might be a good place to start learning about MIDI, the DLS synth, external MIDI, and MTC. It doesn't discuss VSTis, but that wasn't avaliable for acid 3.0.
