Vegas won't save preferences.

Hello everybody.

At this point getting angry and frustrated, I would like to know where Vegas 5 preferences are stored, hoping to edit stuff manually. Unfortunately I can't find any such .ini file.
Looking into Options/Preferences/General/ and unchecking "Ignore third party DV codecs" doesn't seem to help. When I restart Vegas, the application apparently changes all settings back to default.

Well, additionally could you please tell me why movie shots from my digicam, Canon SD10, can't be opened in Vegas 5? These are 320x240 at 15fps. Perfectly suited for a Vegas template called "Multimedia (320*240; 15,000 fps), I thought. After a few tricks, first re/decompressing in VirtualDub to uncompressed RGB helped. So, Vegas won't import 'native' movie shots from my digicam?

Thanks.

Options>Preferences

The vid shot with the canon are MJPEGs, and you need to download a codec. Not a Vegas issue, it's a codec issue.. You need to download an MJPEG codec. Search this forum for posts containing links to free ones.

Why/what are you looking to manually change? Codecs for your Canon? Modifying prefs won't help that.

My first question addressed an issue, at least here, where Vegas won't keep changed settings, among others "ignore third party DV codecs". Yes, I did restart the application so new settings would take effect. When launched, all settings were default, not as I just changed them.

So Vegas' inability to import movie shots from my digicam, is not a Vegas issue? How come they can be opened and played in about every player and editor I have installed? And yes, I do have a MJPEG codec installed. Vegas 5 is the only application that neither can open or play those clips. It will import audio only, no video.

If you are ignoring 3rd party codecs, then you'll not see/use that codec. Don't know why your system isn't saving prefs. In all my years of Vegas, I've never seen this as an issue, but then again, you might have changed something. I wish I had an answer. You're hitting "APPLY" after changing the prefs, right? If you search the forums, you'll likely not find this particular issue anywhere. Also, if you've got other NLE's installed, it's quite possible that something has damaged the DLL's for Vegas. I'd hit CTRL+SHIFT when loading Vegas to reset everything, or do a repair install and reset Vegas to original, then try from there.
If you want to upload a short sample of your canon's video, I'd be happy to take a quick look to see what's up.

Ok, I disabled MJPEG from ffdshow, which took care of decoding MJPEG clips. Then I installed a standalone MJPEG codec from Pegaus. Now all movie shots from my Canon digicam can be edited in Vegas. Don't ask me why it didn't work with ffdshow's MJPEG decoding capability. Thanks for the hint!

I'll still have to figure out my second problem, namely Vegas resetting changes to preference boxes.

Hey Spot- you have been a wealth of information to many on this forum.

Continuing in the thinking about saving config options- Is there a way to save the configuration in a file. I recently upgraded my system and reinstalled the operating system and VV5. It would of been great to have the ability to simply load my previous configuration options that I used in the past. Given the power of VV5 this is probalby available and I am not aware of it.

This was an issue that had me tearing my hair out a few months ago. Here's the solution. Scroll down to the "riredale" posting.

I'm glad to find this issue already covered. In fact I suspected it could be related to read/write/execute permissions, therefore I hoped loging in as administrator would do the trick, unfortunately it didn't.

Riredale, which O/S do you run? Running Win2000 Pro with SP4 I can't find "Permissions" described by you in step 4. All I can see given I right-click is Expand (not selectable), New, Find, Delete, Rename, Copy Key Name.

(1) Back up your system first, in case you completely screw things up
(2) Go into Regedit
(3) Navigate to HKEY Current_user/Software/Sony Media Software/Vegas/5.0
(4) Right-click on the 5.0 folder, and select "Permissions."
(5) Set those permissions to "allow."

It works! Finally. Thanks Riredale.
I would like to stress the fact you must use regedt32.exe when following Riredale's solution. At least Win2000 brings you regedt32.exe (32bit) and regedit.exe (16bit). According to Win2000 help section:

"You cannot set the security for registry keys. If you need this functionality, you must use Regedt32.exe. "

Sony shouldn't expect users to peek into registry (once you figured it out!) for such simple task as saving preferences.

Greetings

You can do the same with using the VEGAS 5 internal preference setting.
