I'm a total newbie so excuse my ignorance. When I render a single track that I have gotten from a stereo CD into 5.1, I get waveforms only on the right and left tracks of the 5 tracks that show up. When I draw or paint on the Surround or Center tracks, there is only a straight line (and of course no sound from any of my five speakers). And I can't paste anything into the empty tracks because copy/paste works only within a track. I must be missing something pretty basic about rendering.

That’s because Stereo only uses the left and right tracks therefore there should be nothing in the surround tracks. I’m not sure what you’re trying to do but you have to render to 5.1 AFTER you assign music to the surround tracks, not before.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish? If you are trying to make a stereo CD recording into 5.1 then change your project to 5.1, insert the stereo CD tracks, insert Surround Pan Keyframes (Shift+P) on the two stereo tracks, make your surround speaker assignments, and then render to 5.1. You should then have music on the surround tracks for the areas where you assigned a music to that track.

You are still only going to have two tracks swirling around in 5.1 because that’s all the source you have to deal with. You might want to add some additional loops to the music and place them in the surround speakers or even add effects like reverb or delay and assign those to the surround speakers. If you were expecting ACID to make 5 tracks out of 2, that is mathematically impossible. ;-)

Guess what? I followed your instructions and fiddled around a bit...Alas, it worked! Many THANKS for your reply which significantly reduced my frustration.
I have another question. When I "save" tracks with panning keyframes, they can be opened with the pan positions. However when I "render" in either wav or aiff, the pan position on all tracks is in the center. I have not tried burning tracks to a 5.1 CD with AC-3 format yet, so maybe this is not going to be a problem. If it is, would you let me know what I am missing?
( Incidently, you asked why I was trying to convert a stereo CD to 5.1. I'm a professor playing with resonant frequencies of the human body. Kinky? Yes. In Berkeley? Yes.)

Make sure when you select wav or aiff you select a template that is Stereo not Mono. I know in the wav template, the first one is 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Mono PCM while the rest are Stereo PCM.

Thanks, It’s actually nice to have the opportunity to give back to the community that taught me when I was learning. As a teacher yourself, you know that students often ask questions that you never thought of and by doing so, they push you to finding answers that you never would have known were it not for them. Therefore, in teaching you expand your learning as well. Besides, two of my sisters are teachers so perhaps its just in my genes.;-)
