If you watch this again, you'll see that what I was talking about is that you cannot connect a hard drive or other standard 1394 device to a Matrox, Canopus, or Pinnacle Firewire card. If you do, it will damage the hard drive, and potentially your computer.
If you have an OHCI card, you can connect anything that is Firewire to that card. But if you have a proprietary card, such as the above mentioned devices, you cannot connect anything but a camera to those devices.

Thanks for your response. Just to confirm, I have just built a new computer that has IEEE1394 port on the mb, can I connect my camcorder to this port instead of installing the PCI add-on card that I had been using in the past? If either option will work, is one better than the other? Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can likely use the built in port. In the past 2 years or so, most computers with built in 1394 ports are OHCI compatible.

I use my motherboard firewire for camcorder capture all the time.

Works great.

Spot you mentioned Canopus in your statement about cards that will damage the external thing plugged into it, I assume you did not mean the ADVC-1394 which is OCHI compliant.

The ADVC 1394 wasn't available at the time I did the video. But no, I would not have included the Canopus ADVC1394 had it been available. I'm sure there are probably going to be OHCI compatible cards in the future from Matrox and/or Pinnacle as well. That's the unfortunate side of DVD training, things change...;-)
