Subject:Will Sony Sound Forge 7.0 Put Breaks Between Audio Tracks While Recording

Hi There! I currently have an M-Audio Audiophile USB Interface and Sony Sound Forge 7.0. And I was wanting to hook up my cassette player to it (Through The RCA Input) and record some of my cassettes onto my computer. But I was wondering if there is anyway for Sony Sound Forge 7.0 to identify a change in song. I'm just concerned about getting Sound Forge to create a new file for each song instead of having one huge file at the end. I read I think on this forum or maybe in the manual about how you can setup Sound Forge to look for points during a record when there is no audio being inputted or a break in audio and have it split at each one of those intervals. But I'm not too sure if I was understanding this function correctly. I guess this type of question would also apply if you were trying to record a 8-Track, or a LP. Or anything with continuous audio. Any Advice On This Matter Is Much Appreciated! Thanks In Advance Butt_Love |

When you open the record window in the "method" drop down box there is an "automatic threshold" selection. Choose that and be sure to check the box of "automatically rearm after record" You will have to adjust the threshold to get it to work best with the source you are using. In your case of transfering cassettes, the cassette will have a tape hiss noise floor, so you will want to set the threshold just above that. What I normally do is just hit record and while it's recording you hit the "m" key, at the beginning of each song. This will place markers in the long file so you can easily navigate to the start of each song. |

You may also be able to record the whole thing at once, clean up the noise, and then use the auto region feature (Tools -> Auto Region) to create a region for each song. You can then extract the regions. |

On the same thread, but slightly different question: Last night I put a CD into the tray and used Sound Forge (a menu option under File) to copy all ten tracks. I was surprised to end up with the entire CD as one big audio file. So I tried again, checking one of the option boxes (I'm working on another computer right now--can't remember) in the hopes that I'd get ten tracks. I could swear that I'd done it before without a hitch. But this time: no dice. I've been away from it for a while. What am I forgetting to do? |

Simplest suggestion, use Nero, it does an excellent job of extracting tracks as separate files. Best tool I've found for breaking a long .wav is Blaze Audios Wave Breaker. It looks like a bit of a consummer toy but it's dirt cheap and the damn thing works a dream. After all, all it's doing is splitting the file so it's not going to damage the content. Bob. |
