Should we update our WinXP or wait a little longer? Any known side-effects for SF or Vegas?
Comments appreciated...
Thanks,
JTelles

I installed SP2, no problems at all --

I did have to reinstall my driver for my M Audio FW410, but other than that smooth sailing --

I must be in the minority, but I installed SP2 and the flash screen and Vegas freezing upon second startup bug popped up and only went away when I uninstalled SP2.

I have had some weird stuff happen since installing SP2 and upgrading to SF 7.0b. Please refer to my postings on 10/4 and 10/8 ..."teaktart"

I am habitual about scanning for problems (Norton's) and defragging, running anti spyware, etc as I work with video (Vegas 4.0) as well.
I did my usual 'house cleaning' maintainance on my computer before leaving on vacation.

Came back and upgraded to SF 7.0b and also installed SP2. Next time I went to work some audio in SF 7.0b I had a host of weird audio glitches as mentioned in earlier postings. One of the weird ones was that I noticed my wave hammer was now listed as a 'demo'....hence the weird audio sounds?

I checked again for "problems" via Nortons' and there were a lot that needed fixing. My hard drives were very fragmented even though I hadn't been using them much (including one saying it was 90% fragmented!) So I defragged, rescanned ,etc. That cleared up all but the wave hammer "demo" and the audio glitches in my file and the DC offset after processing. So I uninstalled and then reinstalled SF 7.0b and the 'demo' is gone now and the wave hammer works but after using it I still have a very visible DC offset of the region that was processed so am still stuck with that weirdness and looking for solutions. I can't tell whether this a related to SF7.0b or is a result of the SP2 install. I would like to hear what others have experienced since installing SP2.....I have my suspicions the SP2 took my data and put it in some kind of 'blender' with all the fragging that it did to my data in several hard drives I hadn't touched while on vacation.
Good Luck,
Teaktart

From the fourm reports I've seen, many more people are having problems with SP2 than are not. The *only* reason to install it is to gain the latest security fixes from MS but it will do nothing to improve your DAW functioning. Having a DAW online is a very bad idea anyway.

Guess I was lucky...
When I first posted this question and got no immediate negative answers, I went and installed SP2 in my PCs. No problems with Echo and Digigram sound cards and no noticiable glitches in wave hammer either. So far everything is smoooth in SF 7b and the latest Vegas, only a dictionay I have in one PC asked for validation again, which I did without any further complication. I always dreaded these major updates.

Since upgrading to SP2 on two PCs I have had trouble on both. My studio PC would not talk to Vegas and other programs via firewire, so had to backtrack to SP1 and all's well.

However, tried to use Sound Forge on my notebook PC (since SP2) and lost most of my Process and Effects which I am assuming is SP2??? Tried to resinstall 7.0b this morning and still the same. Also getting nasty pops and glitches with Wavehammer (which is one of only very few that work).

Looks like I had better go back. Any comments before I try?

Best regards,
Richard

Try a series of reboots without doing anything else. Apparently it is suggested on the MS site to do this after installing SP2. As I mentioned earlier tho, unless you need the security features in SP2, I'd remain with SP1.

There are known problems with SP2 and firewire. If you want to use SP2 then you need to uninstall the SP2 firewire drivers and reinstall the SP1 firewire drivers. I think the RME web site has posted a detailed description of which driver files need to be changed and how to do it.

Thanks for replies,

I have tried repeated reboots to no avail and Sound Forge is still working minus most Processes and Effects. Tried to uninstall SP2 but found I have already deleted the installation files to save space and cannot uninstall. Jeezzz.....

A windows update also fails with an error message that is not found on MS site! Looks like I had better get over to the Windoze sites and sort this out, but SF clearly may not work on this Sony Vaio notebook with SP2.

Greg. Excuse ignorance, but what is the RME web site? I may need to retry SP2 again in future, so better understanding of the firewire issue will help. For the time being I am stuck with one PC running everything Ok, and the notebook rather crippled. :(

My SP2 installed without a hiccup. Completely transparent.

I'm using SF Studio 6e and installed SP2. Haven't noticed any problems whatsoever.
