Because of the many variables in our computers, I doubt there is a simple answer other than, "it depends on your rig".

I had a dual 1ghz board with a VIA chipset that barely ran anything well even though it had 2gb of ram. I put the same procs onto a board with an Intel chipset and it runs better with only 512mb ram..

It depends on how many loops and effects you run. I guess you could say,"As much as you can afford." But there is a (variable) point of diminished returns.

To add to what everyone's said, it will depend on your operating system as well.

For example, Windows XP requires 64 MB minimum, but that's very paltry. At least 128 is needed for good performance; 256 MB is even better. So the more you can afford, the better. RAM prices aren't that bad so you could find at least 512 for a good price.

As a side note, I would suggest those looking to upgrade ACID in the future that you seriously consider also upgrading your OS if you're using Windows 98 or Me. SPD's apps like Sound Forge and Vegas are supported under XP/2000 only. I'd say it's pretty likely the next version of ACID Pro will head in that direction as well. The new version of ACID Music Studio is evidence of the trend.
