Subject:odd static in waves, on Win Media Player

Brand new problem:

I render a WAVE from an Acid project. If I double-click the WAVE, Win Media Player launches, and as the song starts to play I get hideous CRACKLING static (which goes away after a few seconds).

If I click STOP, then click PLAY, the static WON'T be there at the beginning of the song. This only happens when I double click a WAVE, & it launches WMP. (Once WMP is launched, the problem goes away.)

Strange: I only get the static on NEW WAVES that I;ve rendered recently in Acid. I don't get this problem on older Acid-made WAVES. I also don't get the static on WAVES/MP3's/WMA's that I make off of commercially available CD's.

***Only significant recent computer changes: XP service pack II.

This static is LOUD.

Does it play this way in other programs?

Hmm. It could be a soundcard driver problem. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your soundcard?

I don't think I explained this right.

I don't have static in the WAVEs themselves. They play fine start-to-finish once Win Media Player has already been launched (for ex, if they are played in shuffle mode along with other songs). They also play fine if I launch WMP, and THEN select & play the WAVE.

Only this situation makes static -- I double click the (Acid-made) WAVE. I only get static at the start of the song for a short time. Sometimes it sounds like WMP is also cutting off a small bit of the beginning of the song.

I don't have any problems once the WAVEs are burned to CD, and the waves play fine on other audio equipment.

This is only on new waves I've rendered in the last week, not on any older Acid -rendered waves -- these still play w/o static.

I tried vairous driver / audio device etc settings to see if this would help, but none made any difference.

The only change I made recently was to go with XP Service Pack II -- I wonder if a new update of the Media Player came with a changed setting somewhere.

Still sound like I should re-install my drivers? Is this a unique problem? Seemed to me it might be on the WMP side rather than the Acid side, tho is is suspicious that my older Acid rendered Waves play static-free.

(PS - mD & johnny boy, thanks for all this great help)

Is it safe for me to fiddle with Win Media Players VIDEO ACCELERATION setting?

I have no idea what this stuff means, but right now I'm (using defaults):
DEFAULT (network) BUFFERING
VIDEO ACCELERATION - FULL (recommended)

There are other settings, I have no idea: Video Smoothing, RGB FLIPPING.

I'm guessing something got re-set in Win MP when I installed XP service pack II

Hmm. It does sound like Windows Media Player is having a problem, maybe with your soundcard and/or video drivers. Update or reinstall both first to see if that helps.

Odd, but here goes.

My settings: <FILE><PROPERTIES>16 bit, am experimenting with 48,000 / 44,100.

<OPTIONS><PREFERENCES><AUDIO> Windows Classic / Microsoft Sound Mapper

I changed my RENDER AS sample rate down from 192,000, & the static went away when I got to 96,000 Hz. (for some reason, the 192,000 hadn't been a problem up until the last week)

192 kHz? That might be overkill, especially if your hardware interface doesn't directly support that sample rate. 96 kHz sounds more reasonable as most pro-level interfaces support that sample rate. What's your audio interface? (You might have mentioned this, but I help so many, I forget nowadays. :) )

Glad to hear you have it sorted out though.
