Subject:Sonar user, do I need Acid

Greetings all. I am a big fan of Sony's products, and I currently own:

-Vegas 5 and DVD 2,
-CD Arch 5,
-Noise Red 2,
-Acid 4 (NOT Pro...Is it worth it to upgrade? based on what I already have), and
-Sound Forge 7

I am also a Sonar 3 Producer Edition user.

My question is, due to the fact that I love all of my Sony software, is there any reason to get Acid Pro 4? What exactly can it do that I can't do in any of my other programs. Since Sonar 3 can both create and use Acid loops, what am I missing by not getting Acid Pro 4?

Thanks for the help.

BTW: I also should mention that I just got Rudy's Acid Pro 4 DVD set to learn more about it. I can't see where I would really need to use much outside of Sony's software if you could record multiple tracks in Acid at one time. But my Sonar also has another huge plus: it has been rock solid for me. So why bother getting Acid Pro 4?

Thanks again!!!!!!

While Sonar tolerates ACID Loops, ACID Pro 4.0 excels at manipulating them into a collage of music. It’s hard to explain and is better to just experience. I believe it’s the simple workflow and the ease at which ACID allows you to compose that makes it a better tool for looping. ACID’s user interface doesn’t get in the way of the creation process.

I don’t own Sonar but I did try the demos of Sonar and ACID Pro before I made my purchasing decision. I chose ACID Pro because I was composing music with loops very quickly after first opening it, while in Sonar I was mostly reading the manual and looking for tutorials. There was too much other stuff in Sonar that got in the way. After all, its primary function is multi-track recording and not loop based composition. I compose solo so I don’t need simultaneous multi-track recording.

The closest analogy I can give you is that of an artist’s brush. You might ask, why do I need more that one brush to paint a picture? Because sometimes you want to paint in broad strokes and sometimes, you need a fine brush to add small details. ACID pro is that fine brush for loops. It gives you amazingly detailed control over loops and how they are interpreted, whether they are Beatmapped, Looped, One Shots, or MIDI, etc. There is no one tool that’s right for every job and I believe the two programs compliment each other well. There are many people who own and use both (and are probably better qualified to answer your question because they do own both). The best part is that you can ReWire them together so using both is easy.

Everyone uses ACID differently. For me its ACID’s workflow that made me buy it over Sonar. It was far better suited for loops based composition. Like you, I already knew the Sony interface (I also own Vegas 5+DVD and Sound Forge 5) so it completed the suite. I suggest you try the demo of ACID Pro 4.0 and follow along with Rudy on his DVD and you’ll see why its just the best tool for looped based music composition.

I'd suggest the demo as well. You might find it useful, or you might find that you can do the same things in Sonar.

Own both, wouldn't part with either. As JohnnyRoy points out, Acid absolutely smokes Sonar when it comes to handling loops. Sonar, on the other hand, smokes Acid when it comes to MIDI. You already own Sonar, so I would just say that if you are currently (or planning on) using a lot of loops in your compositions, go with Acid. (Try it out first, since you can do so for free).

Adding to what everyone else has mentioned, ACID Pro 4.0 has features you may find handy, like its ability to route tracks to different hardware (via busses), support for DirectX effects and the Chopper. ACID Pro is also the only version of ACID that uses and implements stretch markers, which can make your loops (especially any custom loops you make) sound that much better.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I would love to hear from a few other people, and some of their opinions. I do have Acid 4.0, but still wondering, or trying to make a decision as to whether or not it is worth the money to upgrade. This would be a NO brainer if I didn't already have SONAR 3 PE, but it is the excitement of the ACID Pro users that have made me question whether it is that much easier or better than doing the same thing with in SONAR.

So once again, thank, and I welcome more feedback.

I downloaded the demo for Sonar recently, and it is reasonably intuitive considering the amount of features it has. But it can't come close to Acid in terms of getting things done very quickly, at least for me. I would wait until Acid Pro 5.0 comes out (hopefully soon--I know it's been discussed a million times here), and see if its new features will make Sonar more redundant. That would be my suggestion, if you can stand the unbelievably long wait (sorry, couldn't resist :o)).

Peace.

Thanks DJ Don. I'm really looking forward to seeing what version 5 has to offer as well. And your input is appreciated.

You could always use both; SONAR for its multitracking and MIDI and ACID Pro for its looping. (Actually, you could use MIDI in both depending on what you need.)

This is actually how some users use both, very much like how some users use Vegas and ACID Pro together.
