Subject:7.0a wants me to submit reg info every time I launch...

Please...someone tell me that this isn't the way things are supposed to work! I"ve tried installing, uninstalling, manually cleaning up the crud left behind by the uninstaller, reinstalling, installing version 6.0 + the 7.0 update version, uninstalling everything and reinstalling only the 7.0 update version, etc., etc., and no matter what I do, I get the "you have 30 days left to activate...) dialog and have to connect to the mothership in order to proceed. I'm figuring the craftily-hidden clue here is the word "activate" (as opposed, say, to "register"). So I hit the mothership site and got an emailed "activation" code. Of course, no where on the site (that I can find) or in the email is there anything so helpful as an indication of where to enter it. FWIW, the knowledge base tells me that this occurs when the app is installed using other than an Admin account. I am Admin on my machine, so that's not the issue here. It also says I might need a new activation code if I'm running a new version of Windows. Would that include XP SP2? Sorry for sounding so irritated, but I wish Sony would enter the real world and realize that these tactics only piss off legitmate customers. I could, in minutes, download a cracked copy, but I paid full price for this software and I hate having to jump through hoops just to use it. |

Well when installing Soundforge 7.0a on Windows XP SP2 I had exactly the same problem as you describe. It also wanted me to activate on every launch. I tried to use activation from another computer (can also be the same computer :-)), and this way, it worked fine. |

Sounds like the new XP SP2 security updates blocks the registration process. Seeing Sound Forge 7.0 was released prior to Xp2 therefore has never been tested with Sound Forge, you're one of the first to experience the problem. There should be an option to register by phone, you might want to try that. When you received the email from Siony, it gives instructions of what to do next, have you followed those steps? |

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try "activation from another computer". |

No, I have not yet followed those additional steps. At this point, I don't understand clearly enough what the problem is and whether "activation" or a "reg file" is the solution. When I launch forge, the splash screen shows that it is registered to me (i.e., it has my name, serial number and computer ID), but it also says "Expires in nn days". So it looks to me like registration has succeeded. I don't think XP SP2 is "blocking" anything. I don't get prompted by the firewall when the reg dialog comes up and when I follow the prompts I do get to the final stage where I'm thanked (once again!) for registering the software. If, as you say, Sound Forge 7.0a was released prior to XP SP2 and therefore has never been tested -- then surely someone at Sony has a few minutes to see whether the current version of their product will install under the (now) current version of the OS! |

Thanks once again for this suggestion. I tried it. It worked. I am happy. ;-) |
